Two officers from South Africa’s elite Anti-Gang Unit were shot dead in an ambush on Friday evening in Reiger Park, Boksburg, east of Johannesburg, authorities confirmed. Two women were also killed at the scene, bringing the death toll to four.
Acting National Police Commissioner General Puleng Dimpane appealed to the public for help identifying the attackers. Gauteng provincial commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni has taken charge of the investigation. The officers were on patrol when they came under fire at approximately 7:30 p.m.
The killings have sent shockwaves through the law enforcement community and reignited concerns about the safety of South African police officers operating in high-crime areas. The Anti-Gang Unit was established specifically to tackle organized gang violence in the Western Cape and Gauteng provinces.
South Africa has one of the highest rates of violent crime in the world, with police regularly coming under attack. According to the South African Police Service, dozens of officers are killed in the line of duty each year, many during routine patrols in marginalized communities.
The ambush in Boksburg, an industrial city on the East Rand of Gauteng province, highlights the persistent danger faced by law enforcement even in relatively established suburban areas. Reiger Park has long struggled with gang activity and organized crime.
South Africa’s Police Ministry has repeatedly called for harsher sentences for those who attack police officers, arguing that the current justice system fails to deter violence against law enforcement. Friday’s ambush is expected to intensify pressure on the government to act.
The investigation is ongoing. Police have not yet confirmed whether the ambush is linked to gang retaliation or organized criminal networks operating in the area. No arrests have been reported so far.
