Google Gemini Reaches 1 Billion Monthly Active Users

Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced the Gemini app has surpassed 1 billion monthly active users, making it the 14th Google product to hit the milestone.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced on Monday that the Gemini app has surpassed 1 billion monthly active users, making it the 14th Google product to reach the milestone and cementing the AI chatbot as one of the company’s fastest-growing products.

The announcement, shared via X, comes just weeks after Google’s Q2 2026 earnings call where the company reported over 950 million monthly users and a tripling of daily active users over the past year. Gemini has now crossed the line into true mass adoption, putting it on par with OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which hit 1 billion monthly active users in June.

Google also shared new data on how people are actually using the chatbot. According to the company, 63 percent of Gemini users talk directly to the assistant using the voice feature, signaling a strong shift toward conversational AI interaction. Gemini now generates more than 150 million images every day, and the app has attracted over 100 million active users on iOS alone.

The growth reflects Google’s aggressive integration of Gemini across its product ecosystem. The AI is woven into Search, Workspace, Android, and the standalone Gemini app, with Google’s AI Mode in Search achieving over 1 billion monthly active users globally. However, the latest figure refers specifically to the Gemini app and does not include AI users from other Google channels.

Google has also been rolling out new models and features to maintain momentum. Gemini 3.5 Flash, released in May, is designed to improve coding and autonomous AI-agent tasks. The company continues to invest heavily in the AI space as it competes with OpenAI, Anthropic, and other labs for dominance in the rapidly growing chatbot market.

The milestone comes as Google faces increasing competition across the AI landscape. DeepSeek and other Chinese labs are pushing open-weight models that rival proprietary systems, while Anthropic’s Claude and OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 continue to advance in capability. Google’s ability to leverage its massive distribution advantage through Android and Search remains a key differentiator.

Despite the user growth, questions remain about monetization and the sustainability of the compute costs required to serve over a billion AI chatbot users. Google has not disclosed specific revenue figures for Gemini but has indicated that AI is driving growth across its cloud and advertising businesses.
