OpenAI has officially announced that it will introduce advertising to its ChatGPT platform for free-tier users in Europe, marking a significant expansion of its revenue strategy.
Notifications sent on Friday to “Free and Go” plan users in the European Economic Area (EEA) and Switzerland confirmed that ads would appear within the chatbot starting later this month. The move follows a successful beta period in English-speaking markets earlier this year.
The company clarified that paid tiers, including Plus, Pro, Enterprise, Business, and Education, will remain ad-free. This tiered approach allows OpenAI to monetize its massive free user base while preserving the premium experience for paying subscribers.
Expanding the Ad Model
OpenAI’s advertising push is a key component of its path toward profitability. With ChatGPT serving hundreds of millions of users, even a small click-through rate on commercial queries represents a significant new revenue stream. The ads are primarily integrated into responses to shopping-related and commercial prompts.
The expansion into the EEA and Switzerland brings the platform under the oversight of the EU’s strict AI Act. OpenAI has stated that its ad systems are designed to be transparent and will comply with all regional regulations regarding automated decision-making and data privacy.
Compliance and Transparency
The introduction of ads in Europe follows the rollout of several AI transparency requirements by the EU. OpenAI must ensure that users can clearly identify sponsored content and understand how their data is used for ad targeting.
Industry analysts have noted that the move puts ChatGPT in direct competition with traditional search engines like Google. As users increasingly turn to AI for product recommendations and research, the “AI Search” ad market is becoming a multi-billion dollar battleground.
