China’s manned space agency said Sunday it is delaying the Chang’e-7 unmanned lunar mission, saying conditions for launch were not met, just two weeks after a rare rocket failure at the same launch site.
The space agency announced the postponement after a comprehensive assessment, stating the mission which involved sending the Chang’e-7 probe on a Long March 5 carrier rocket does not meet launch conditions and cannot take place during the planned window this year. No new date was given.
The decision was based on the principle of prudence, reliability and absolute mission success, the agency said, without specifying what conditions were not met. The probe and carrier rocket had been moved to the take-off area at the Wenchang Space Launch Center in southern Hainan province last week, with officials saying at the time that equipment was in good condition and a launch was scheduled for the coming period.

The delay comes less than two weeks after a Long March 7A rocket carrying the Zhongxing-4B communications satellite exploded shortly after liftoff from the same Wenchang site, in front of onlooking crowds. State news agency Xinhua reported an anomaly occurred during flight, and the cause of the failure remains under investigation.
Chang’e-7 was designed to search for frozen water near the moon’s south pole, a key resource that could support future crewed missions. The mission is a critical stepping stone in Beijing’s broader programme to land astronauts on the moon before 2030, a race with the United States’ Artemis programme.

China has invested billions of dollars in its space programme under what President Xi Jinping calls the country’s space dream. The country successfully landed a reusable rocket for the first time in July, marking a major step in reducing launch costs. The failure of the Long March 7A and now the postponement of Chang’e-7 suggest potential engineering issues that investigators will need to resolve before China’s next major launch.
