Dr. Anthony Fauci appeared before a Senate committee hearing on Wednesday and invoked his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination, declining to answer questions posed by Sen. Rand Paul about the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The former director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases faced lengthy interrogation from Paul, who has long accused Fauci of funding controversial research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology that may have triggered the coronavirus outbreak. Paul released excerpts of Fauci’s pandemic-era diaries ahead of the hearing, intensifying the political battle over the origins of the virus that killed more than one million Americans.
Fauci, who served as a key figure in the federal government’s pandemic response under both the Trump and Biden administrations, has consistently denied allegations that he misled Congress or covered up evidence related to the lab-leak theory.
