North Korean Missiles Likely Used in Russia August Assault

Ukrainian military investigators have identified debris consistent with North Korean KN-23 missiles in the aftermath of Russia’s largest aerial assault of August, raising fresh questions about Moscow’s deepening dependence on foreign weaponry.

On the 1,618th day of the full-scale invasion, Russia launched 74 missiles and 284 drones targeting Kyiv, Lviv, Dnipropetrovsk, Poltava, Kharkiv, Mykolaiv, Sumy, Vinnytsia, Cherkasy, and Ivano-Frankivsk regions. The assault included four anti-ship missiles, nine ballistic missiles, and 61 Kh-101 cruise missiles, according to Ukraine’s Air Force.

KN-23 Debris Found at Radushny

Missile fragments recovered near Radushny bore characteristics of the KN-23, a North Korean copy of Russia’s Iskander ballistic missile first documented in use in May 2024. Experts are examining the debris to confirm the identification, which would mark another confirmed deployment of Pyongyang-supplied weapons against Ukrainian territory.

The use of North Korean ballistic missiles alongside Russian-made systems highlights Moscow’s growing reliance on foreign supply chains to sustain its long-range strike campaign. Ukraine’s Air Force reported intercepting one ballistic missile, more than 50 cruise missiles, and nearly all drones launched in the attack.

Shelter Crisis Compounds civilian Fear

Resident Tetiana Lishchynska told reporters that school bomb shelters in Kyiv remain non-operational until September, leaving residents without safe refuge five years into the full-scale war. The shelter gap has intensified public anxiety as Russia escalates its aerial campaign.

Ukraine’s high command has updated its priorities for mid-range strikes on Russian territory following briefings from top military commanders, while announcing new technological solutions to counter ballistic missile threats.
