The Wall Street Journal first reported that Nvidia is negotiating a backstop worth 50 billion to secure financing for the project, which aims to provide the computing power needed to train and deploy next-generation artificial intelligence models. Bloomberg and CNBC later confirmed the talks, citing people familiar with the matter.

The data center, if completed, would far surpass any existing facility in scale. Current estimates suggest it could require multiple gigawatts of electricity – enough to power a medium-sized city – raising questions about energy grid capacity and environmental impact.

Ohio has emerged as a leading candidate for the project, building on the state existing position as a growing hub for data center investment. Amazon Web Services and Google have already announced major data center expansions in the region. The state offers favorable tax incentives, access to reliable power through the PJM Interconnection grid, and proximity to major fiber optic routes.

OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman has long argued that massive compute infrastructure is a strategic necessity for maintaining US leadership in artificial intelligence. The company has been fundraising aggressively, closing a 0 billion funding round earlier this year that valued the startup at 00 billion.

The scale of the proposed data center reflects the staggering growth in demand for AI computing power. Training frontier models now requires clusters of tens of thousands of specialized graphics processing units running for months at a time. Analysts said the deal would deepen the financial interdependence between OpenAI and Nvidia, a relationship that has already reshaped the semiconductor industry. Nvidia market capitalization has surged past trillion this year, driven almost entirely by demand for its H200 and next-generation B200 AI accelerators.

For Nvidia, guaranteeing 50 billion in financing carries risk but also guarantees a long-term customer for its chips. The guarantee would effectively backstop leases or debt financing for the facility, reducing the cost of capital for OpenAI while securing Nvidia a dominant position in the data center hardware supply chain.

The project is not without skeptics. Critics question whether demand for AI compute will sustain the pace of expansion needed to justify such enormous capital outlays. Some analysts have warned that the AI industry could face a capacity glut if model training efficiencies improve faster than expected or if demand growth decelerates.

Environmental groups have also raised concerns. A facility of this scale would consume vast amounts of electricity, potentially straining local grids and complicating climate goals. OpenAI has said it is exploring carbon offset and renewable energy options but has not disclosed specific plans.

Regulatory approval will also be a factor. The proposed data center could face scrutiny under federal and state environmental review processes, as well as potential antitrust concerns given the deepening ties between OpenAI and Nvidia.

Despite the challenges, the project signals a new phase in the AI arms race, where the bottleneck is no longer algorithms or data but raw computing capacity. Both OpenAI and its competitors, including Google DeepMind and Anthropic, are racing to secure the infrastructure needed to build the next generation of AI systems.

If finalized, the Ohio data center would cement the United States position as the global leader in AI infrastructure investment, far outpacing efforts by China and the European Union to build equivalent capacity.
