Putin Arrives in Sakhalin for Pacific Fleet Drills

Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk to observe the final stage of large-scale Pacific Fleet exercises involving 13,000 troops and 60 warships.

President Vladimir Putin arrived in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk early on August 12 to personally observe the concluding phase of Russia’s Pacific Fleet military exercises, the Kremlin announced. The drills, which began on August 4, represent the fleet’s largest operational training event of 2026.

The exercises span the Sea of Japan, the Sea of Okhotsk, and the northwestern Pacific Ocean, involving more than 13,000 military personnel. The fleet has deployed approximately 60 warships and submarines along with around 30 aircraft, helicopters, and unmanned aerial vehicles for the maneuvers.

Admiral Viktor Liina, commander of the Pacific Fleet, is leading the exercises. According to the Russian Defense Ministry, the drills focus on the integrated use of precision-guided weapons and advanced military equipment across multiple domains of modern warfare.

The Pacific Fleet is a key operational-strategic formation of the Russian Navy, responsible for ensuring Russia’s military security in the Asia-Pacific region. It comprises nuclear-powered strategic and multipurpose submarines, diesel-electric submarines, surface combatants, naval aviation, and coastal defense units.

The timing of the exercises carries significance amid Russia’s ongoing military operations in Ukraine and broader geopolitical tensions with the West. The large-scale drills in Russia’s Far East demonstrate Moscow’s capacity to project military power across multiple theaters simultaneously, even while engaged in a prolonged ground war in Eastern Europe.

Pacific Fleet exercises have historically tested Russia’s ability to repel potential aggression from oceanic and maritime directions. Previous drills have simulated scenarios including the defense of Sakhalin Island and the Kuril Islands, which remain subject to a territorial dispute with Japan dating back to World War II.

The exercises come as Russia expands its military partnerships in the Asia-Pacific region, deepening ties with China and maintaining its presence near key shipping lanes. Military analysts note that the scale and scope of this year’s Pacific Fleet drills signal Moscow’s intent to sustain a credible naval posture across the Pacific despite resource demands from the Ukraine front.
