Russia launched a mass ballistic missile attack on Kyiv early Saturday, killing at least three people and injuring five others as more than 10 explosions shook the Ukrainian capital, local officials said.
Mayor Vitali Klitschko said all five injured residents were hospitalized, with earlier reports indicating the wounded included a 17-year-old boy. The attack caused fires and destruction across the Solomianskyi, Shevchenkivskyi, Darnytskyi and Holosiivskyi districts of the city.
In the Solomianskyi district, a strike set fire to a six-story non-residential building, while cars burned in a parking area. People were trapped inside a five-story residential building after missile debris fell nearby, and a fire broke out in the building’s courtyard.
In the Shevchenkivskyi district, the first and second floors of a residential building partially collapsed, leaving people trapped inside, and a car wash also caught fire. Warehouse buildings were burning in the Darnytskyi district, where authorities separately reported a strike on a non-residential site. Missile debris also fell on non-residential property in the Darnytskyi and Holosiivskyi districts.
The air-raid alert was lifted at 2:47 a.m., although emergency crews continued searching damaged buildings and responding to fires. Officials said the casualty figures remained preliminary and could rise as rescue operations continued.
The barrage follows a series of Russian ballistic missile attacks on Ukrainian cities in recent weeks, part of a campaign that has put Kyiv’s air defenses under growing strain. It also came as Washington weighed whether to license Patriot interceptor production in Ukraine; President Donald Trump on Friday cast doubt on the pledge, saying the United States had not approved the transfer of production licenses.
Ukraine has in turn stepped up long-range strikes on Russian soil, including overnight drone attacks that hit a Wildberries logistics hub and a Lukoil refinery in Volgograd. Moscow says its air defenses downed dozens of drones, while Kyiv describes such strikes as retaliation for attacks on civilian infrastructure.
