Multiple fast-moving wildfires tore through Spokane County, Washington, on Saturday, destroying hundreds of structures and forcing thousands of residents to flee their homes as Governor Bob Ferguson declared a state of emergency across the region.
The Old Trails Fire, the largest of three blazes burning near the city of Spokane, grew to more than 3,500 acres within hours after igniting Saturday afternoon. Driven by extreme heat and powerful winds, the fire jumped the Spokane River and pushed into residential neighborhoods on the city’s northwest side, leveling homes in the Indian Trail area.
By Sunday morning, the combined Spokane Area Fires had scorched an estimated 5,390 acres and destroyed more than 600 structures, according to InciWeb, the national wildfire tracking system. At least 4,000 buildings remained threatened, with Level 3 evacuation orders, the most urgent category, in effect for large parts of northwest Spokane and surrounding communities.
The National Guard was activated to assist with evacuations and firefighting operations. Evacuation shelters opened across the area for displaced residents, many of whom fled with little more than the clothes on their backs as walls of flame consumed entire blocks. One resident told local media that in 30 years of living in the area, he had never seen fire approach so close to his home.
Over 40,000 utility customers lost power across the region as the fires damaged electrical infrastructure. The National Weather Service warned of continued dangerous fire conditions through the weekend, with temperatures exceeding 100 degrees and gusty winds expected to persist. Governor Ferguson described the situation as a particularly dangerous situation for communities throughout eastern Washington.
The fires were among more than a dozen large blazes burning across Washington state, which has been gripped by an extended heat dome. Across the state, more than 200,000 acres were burning from 12 large fires, the governor’s office said. The confluence of extreme heat, dry conditions, and high winds created what fire officials described as explosive fire behavior rarely seen in the Pacific Northwest.
Fire crews from across the region converged on Spokane County as local resources were quickly overwhelmed. Officials warned that containment would take days at minimum and urged residents in evacuation zones to leave immediately, noting that the fast-moving blazes could overtake neighborhoods with little warning.
The disaster marks one of the worst wildfire events in Spokane’s history, compounding concerns about the escalating impact of climate-driven extreme weather events on communities throughout the western United States.
