Taiwan launched its annual Han Kuang 42 military exercises on Wednesday, marking the island’s largest and most comprehensive war games designed to test its combat readiness against a potential Chinese attack.
The drills, which run through the week, simulate scenarios ranging from a full-scale Chinese amphibious invasion to missile strikes on critical infrastructure and cyber attacks on government systems. This year’s exercises place particular emphasis on command flexibility, with forces expected to adapt rapidly to changing battlefield conditions rather than following rigid pre-planned scripts.
Reuters reported that the exercises test a new command structure recently adopted by Taiwan’s military, which aims to decentralise decision-making and allow frontline commanders to respond more quickly to threats. The shift reflects lessons learned from observing the war in Ukraine, where flexible command has proven critical against a larger invading force.
The drills come at a moment of heightened cross-strait tensions. Beijing has increased its military pressure on Taiwan over the past year, with regular incursions by Chinese warplanes and naval vessels into Taiwan’s air defence identification zone. China’s newly announced export curbs on drone components and blacklisting of US firms tied to Taiwan arms sales have further inflamed the situation.
Taiwan’s Defence Ministry said the exercises would involve all branches of the military, including the army, navy, air force, and newly established missile command. Civilian agencies are also participating, with simulations of wartime evacuation procedures and critical infrastructure protection across major cities.
A particularly notable element of this year’s Han Kuang is the integration of unmanned systems into the exercises. Taiwan has been rapidly expanding its drone capabilities in response to lessons from modern conflict zones, and the drills will test how drone swarms can be deployed for surveillance, strike, and battlefield damage assessment.
The exercise unfolds against a backdrop of shifting regional alliances. US senators are currently touring the Indo-Pacific region, visiting Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan in an effort to reassure nervous Asian allies about Washington’s commitment to regional security. The timing underscores the strategic importance of Taiwan’s defence readiness in the broader Indo-Pacific security architecture.
