President Donald Trump on Monday demanded that Senate Majority Leader John Thune cancel the chamber’s traditional August recess and keep lawmakers in Washington until they pass the SAVE America Act, a voting and election security bill that has become a flashpoint in Republican internal divisions.
In a series of posts on social media, Trump called on the Senate to “stay in session and work until the SAVE America Act is on my desk” and accused Republicans who oppose the measure of being “disloyal to the party and the American people.” The bill would require photo identification for all federal voting, ban ballot drop boxes, restrict mail-in voting, and mandate that all ballots be counted by election night.
Thune pushed back publicly, telling reporters that the Senate schedule had been set months in advance and that major legislation requires “more than social media posts to move through the chamber.” The Majority Leader noted that the Senate already has a full calendar of appropriations bills and defense authorization legislation that must pass before the end of the fiscal year.
The SAVE America Act passed the House in a party-line vote last month but has stalled in the Senate, where at least two Republican senators have expressed reservations about provisions they say could disenfranchise military and overseas voters. Under Senate rules, the bill needs 60 votes to advance, meaning it would require at least seven Democratic votes in addition to the entire Republican conference.
Democrats have uniformly opposed the legislation, arguing it amounts to voter suppression. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer called Trump’s demand “an authoritarian power grab” and said Democrats would use every procedural tool to block the bill.
Several Republican senators, speaking on condition of anonymity, expressed frustration with Trump’s demand, noting that the August recess is a long-standing tradition that allows senators to spend time in their home states ahead of the November midterm elections. With several competitive Senate races on the ballot, many Republican incumbents have scheduled extensive campaign travel for August.
The dispute has exposed tensions between the White House and Senate Republican leadership. Thune, who has generally aligned with Trump on policy, faces pressure from both the conservative wing pushing for the SAVE Act and moderates wary of its political fallout. The bill’s most contested provisions include an accelerated ballot-counting deadline that election officials in several states have said is logistically impossible to meet.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, a potential 2028 presidential contender, weighed in by saying there is “basically zero” chance the SAVE Act clears the Senate before the scheduled August 7 recess. His assessment was echoed by Senate aides tracking the floor calendar.
Political analysts note that Trump’s demand carries risks. If Republicans fail to deliver the bill, Trump could use it to rally his base against Senate incumbents in primary challenges. But forcing a prolonged session without passing the bill could also hand Democrats a messaging victory ahead of the midterms.
The Senate is currently scheduled to recess on August 7 and return on September 8. Any change to that schedule requires unanimous consent or a formal resolution, both of which face uncertain prospects given the chamber’s narrow Republican majority.
