VeChain Interstellar Hardfork Lands Tuesday With 11 EIPs at Once

VIP-255 passed all-stakeholder voting and activates at block 25,902,540 on September 16, closing most of the EVM gap with Ethereum in a single fork.

VeChain will activate its Interstellar hardfork on Tuesday, September 16, at block height 25,902,540, an estimated 11:15 a.m. UTC. The upgrade, known as VIP-255, passed all-stakeholder voting and folds eleven Ethereum improvement proposals into a single consensus-breaking change, the largest protocol shift in the network’s Renaissance roadmap.

Interstellar is the third stage of VeChain’s Renaissance series. Galactica laid EVM foundations, Hayabusa reworked consensus and tokenomics, and Interstellar now targets compatibility with the wider Ethereum ecosystem. In one step, VeChainThor’s virtual machine moves from a Shanghai-compatible implementation to alignment with Ethereum’s Cancun, Prague and Osaka releases at once. Bundling three Ethereum release cycles into one fork reduces the number of separate consensus-breaking upgrades the network would otherwise have to schedule and survive.

The timing matters for holders and node operators. Exchanges including HTX have already announced support, suspending deposits and withdrawals around the fork window. CryptoTicker measured the mainnet’s block time and the software versions of 105 nodes and recalculated the activation point, confirming the hardfork takes effect at the block number, not at a fixed time of day. Node operators should be running Thor v2.5.0, which shipped after the vote cleared. Anyone staking through StarGate should verify their provider has upgraded before Tuesday.

What VIP-255 actually changes

The proposal introduces new EVM instructions, advanced cryptographic capabilities, better access to historical block information, and additional safeguards on transaction gas and block size. Technical details were published on GitHub under the VIP-255 specification, and the vote ran through the VeVote platform starting August 10, open to validators and eligible StarGate NFT holders.

One of the practical changes is a byte-level cap on block size. Gas accounting alone does not bound how physically large a block can grow, which leaves room to bloat blocks with cheap data and slow propagation across the network. VeChain’s argument is that a byte cap keeps node cost flat as usage climbs, and node cost determines how widely validation can be distributed. A cheaper node is a node more people run.

VeChainThor keeps the architectural features that distinguish it from Ethereum. Multi-clause transactions, the dual-token model, the block-ID structure and fee delegation all remain in place. Transient storage, a concept Ethereum introduced in recent forks, is scoped to an individual clause rather than a whole transaction, a detail that matters for developers porting contracts that assume Ethereum’s scoping rules.

Why developers care

The EVM is the most widely adopted smart-contract execution environment in crypto, and porting contracts between chains is far easier when the execution layers match. VeChain’s pitch is that a developer moving an Ethereum contract onto VeChainThor after Tuesday faces a much smaller gap than before, with better tooling and cheaper proofs as part of the package.

Broader work on full Ethereum transaction equivalence and JSON-RPC parity is specified separately and is not part of this fork. The team has framed Interstellar as closing a significant portion of the compatibility gap while reducing the number of separate consensus-breaking upgrades required. A KuCoin ecosystem summary from September 7 confirmed Thor v2.5.0 shipped, the vote passed, and the mainnet hardfork was locked in for the September 16 block.

Market reaction has been mixed

VET climbed nearly 18 percent in the week after the vote cleared, far outpacing the total market, but the price stalled at the 200-day EMA resistance near $0.0070. Traders have largely priced the upgrade in, and a clean breakout after activation would be needed to confirm a longer move. HTX and other venues that suspended deposits will restore them once the chain stabilizes, which historically takes hours, not days, for a well-rehearsed fork.

The wider context is cautious. The global crypto Fear and Greed Index sits around 70, but the Altcoin Season Index is near 29, meaning capital has stayed concentrated in bitcoin rather than rotating into altcoins. Bitcoin dominance remains near 59 percent, which caps how far single-chain upgrade stories can run. VeChain’s ecosystem numbers are real but modest: more than 5 million unique addresses and 43 million on-chain actions through VeBetterDAO, with the StarGate staking program and a Wanchain bridge integration adding utility.

What comes after the fork

What happens after the fork matters more than the fork itself. VeChain is positioning itself as what the team calls a trust layer for the agentic economy, with MCP tooling that lets AI agents read state, query contracts and transact under spend limits and owner controls, backed by on-chain IDs and scores. AgentSuite, including AgentForge, AgentMarket and AgentTrust, is in early access. VeWorld wallet work covers social login, custody, bridges, native swaps, fiat ramps and native real-world asset support. A high-performance indexer and SDK v3 for agents are in the build pipeline.

If those products draw builders after the EVM gap closes, gas demand for VTHO, which is generated by staking VET, follows, and that creates a direct utility link back to the token. If they do not, Interstellar lands as a well-executed technical upgrade with no immediate payoff. The network has a history of enterprise pilots, including Walmart China and BMW, that have yet to convert into sustained token demand. Tuesday’s fork removes a technical excuse. It does not manufacture usage, and the weeks after activation will show which way VeChain’s story bends.
