Russia launched one of its largest combined missile and drone attacks on Kyiv and the surrounding Kyiv region overnight on August 5, killing at least 17 people and wounding 44 others, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported.
The assault involved 24 ballistic missiles, including Iskander-M and S-400 systems, four Zircon and Onyx anti-ship missiles, and 115 combat drones, a significant number of which were jet-powered, Zelenskyy said in a Telegram post. Ukrainian air defenses intercepted 98 of the incoming drones but were unable to stop the majority of the ballistic missiles.
The heaviest casualties were in the Brovary district of Kyiv region, where eight people were killed and three injured in a strike on a railway station in the village of Kvitneve. Private residential buildings in the area were also damaged. In the nearby village of Peremoha, two people died and eight were wounded when a missile struck a company warehouse facilities.
In the Bucha district, five people were killed and 13 injured in missile strikes on warehouse complexes. The Fastiv district saw one death and three injuries after a logistics center was hit. Within Kyiv itself, a 60-year-old woman was killed in the Obolon district, and 16 people were injured, including an emergency medical services driver. Four of the wounded are in critical condition.
The Silpo supermarket chain confirmed that six of its employees were killed when fires broke out at two of its distribution centers following the Russian shelling. The Nova Post parcel delivery company also reported that three people, including two truck drivers and a subcontractor employee, were killed when cluster munitions struck its sorting center in the capital.
Zelenskyy used the attack to renew his call for Western allies to supply ballistic missile interceptors, saying the weapons could have saved the lives of those killed. Delays in supplying them, or an unwillingness to provide anti-ballistic systems, lead directly to such horrific casualties and destruction, he stated. He also urged G7 nations and the European Union to impose new sanctions, noting that a significant share of Russia ballistic missile production remains unsanctioned.
The Kyiv City and Kyiv Regional Prosecutor Offices have launched pre-trial investigations into the attacks as war crimes under Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The Prosecutor General Office said the final toll and extent of damage are still being determined, with strikes documented across four districts of Kyiv and three districts of the surrounding region.
