Google announced a major leadership shakeup at its most important AI research division on August 5, splitting the role that Demis Hassabis held for sixteen years into two separate positions. Hassabis, the Nobel Prize-winning co-founder of DeepMind, will now serve as chair of Google DeepMind and chief scientist of Alphabet, while Koray Kavukcuoglu assumes day-to-day operational control as senior vice president.
Kavukcuoglu, who previously served as DeepMind’s chief technology officer and Google’s chief AI architect, will oversee Gemini model development, frontier AI research, and the Gemini app and developer teams. The restructuring signals that Google now views running frontier AI research and shipping competitive AI products as two distinct full-time jobs pulling in different directions.
“Hassabis framed his new role as a chance to focus on the big picture,” according to analysis of the announcement. He will continue leading Isomorphic Labs, the drug discovery company spun out of DeepMind’s protein-folding work, and will maintain oversight of Alphabet’s long-term scientific strategy.
The same day, Jeff Dean, one of Google’s most prominent AI researchers and a longtime senior leader, departed to launch his own startup alongside other top researchers. Three additional senior DeepMind researchers also left the company, underscoring the fierce competition for frontier AI talent between Google, Anthropic, and OpenAI.
The timing is significant. Anthropic and OpenAI have been aggressively recruiting from Google’s ranks while competing for the same customers and compute resources. Splitting the DeepMind leadership role allows Google to assign dedicated executive focus to both the research mission and the increasingly urgent product cadence required to keep Gemini competitive.
Alphabet’s stock dipped briefly on the news before recovering, reflecting how markets interpret leadership changes at frontier labs as signals about product velocity. The move follows years of criticism that Google’s AI research and product teams were insufficiently integrated, and that the company was moving too slowly to deploy its breakthroughs.
Kavukcuoglu inherits the most consequential model family in Google’s portfolio at a critical moment. Gemini must compete with OpenAI’s GPT series and Anthropic’s Claude across consumer products, enterprise cloud services, and developer platforms. The restructure gives him clear ownership over that competitive push.
