Robinhood has launched cryptocurrency trading directly within its main UK mobile app, leveraging its 2025 acquisition of Bitstamp to bring digital asset trading to its British user base for the first time. The rollout, announced Monday, allows UK customers to buy, sell, and hold over 130 cryptocurrencies without leaving the familiar Robinhood interface.
The integration marks a significant milestone for Robinhood’s international expansion strategy. The company finalized its 200 million dollar acquisition of Bitstamp in June 2025, gaining access to more than 5,000 institutional clients and 50,000 retail customers across Europe, the UK, and Asia. By embedding Bitstamp’s crypto infrastructure into its own app, Robinhood can now offer UK users a seamless experience backed by FCA-registered compliance.
UK users will have access to major assets including Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, and XRP, as well as a wide range of altcoins. The service supports British pound deposits and withdrawals through the UK’s Faster Payments System, typically processing transactions within minutes. Bitstamp’s existing Luxembourg-based MiCA license provides the regulatory foundation for the offering across the European Economic Area.
The move intensifies competition in the UK crypto market, where established players such as Coinbase, Kraken, and Revolut have long offered digital asset trading. Robinhood’s brand recognition and zero-commission model, which it has applied to crypto in the US, could attract a new wave of retail investors to the space. However, the company faces the challenge of operating within the FCA’s strict marketing rules for crypto assets.
Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev has previously outlined plans to make the company a global financial platform, with crypto trading serving as a key pillar. The UK launch follows successful crypto rollouts in the EU and positions Robinhood to capture market share in one of Europe’s largest financial centers. The company reported that Bitstamp recorded 14.4 billion dollars in crypto trading volume in August 2025, outpacing Robinhood’s own US crypto volumes.
The integration also signals growing institutional confidence in the UK as a crypto hub. Following Brexit, the UK has sought to establish itself as a competitive alternative to the EU for digital asset firms, with the FCA developing a more tailored regulatory framework. Robinhood’s decision to build out its UK crypto capabilities suggests the regulatory environment is becoming more favorable for large-scale retail offerings.
Industry observers note that the launch could pressure legacy UK exchanges on fees and user experience. Robinhood’s simple two-mode app design, combining a basic buy-sell interface with a pro trading mode, has proven popular with younger investors in the US. If that traction translates to the UK market, it could reshape the competitive landscape for crypto trading in Britain.
