Russia Kills 8 in Massive Kyiv Missile Barrage

Zircon hypersonics, Iskanders and North Korean missiles strike Ukrainian capital; Poland starts defensive air ops as drone enters Romanian airspace

Russia launched one of its most intense overnight missile attacks on Kyiv in months, firing Zircon hypersonic cruise missiles, Iskander-M ballistic missiles and North Korean KN-23s at the Ukrainian capital in the early hours of August 20, killing at least eight people and injuring 33.

The attack damaged a children’s hospital, apartment blocks and warehouses across multiple districts of Kyiv, according to the State Emergency Service of Ukraine (DSNS). Emergency crews pulled two survivors from the rubble of demolished buildings, while parts of the capital were plunged into darkness after power lines were severed.

NATO Airspace Responses

Poland activated defensive air operations to protect its airspace, the country’s military said, with aircraft and ground-based air defense systems deployed along the southeastern border shared with Ukraine. Romania also reported that a drone crossed into its territory approximately 13 kilometers east of the city of Galati, crashing in an uninhabited area and sparking a small fire that was quickly extinguished.

The Romanian defense ministry said no casualties or material damage were reported from the incident, and the initial air alert was lifted. The episodes marked the latest in a series of Russian aerial objects straying into NATO member states’ airspace during strikes on Ukraine.

Russia Claims Military Targets

Russia’s defense ministry claimed to have targeted a drone component production facility and a munition depot in Kyiv, according to state-run media, although the claims have not been independently verified. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed damage at a children’s hospital, where windows were shattered and nearby cars caught fire, as well as at an educational institution in the capital.

An industrial center in the Solomyanskyi district of southwest Kyiv was also struck, Klitschko said. In the Brovary district of the broader Kyiv region, one man was killed and another wounded in a separate attack, regional governor Tymur Tkachenko reported.

Escalating Air Campaign

The barrage came as Russia has intensified its air campaign against Ukraine, with President Volodymyr Zelensky saying more than a dozen regions had been targeted over the past week. Russia launched more than 1,550 attack drones, 1,560 guided aerial bombs and 62 missiles at Ukraine in that period alone, according to Ukrainian officials.

Ukraine has simultaneously stepped up its own deep-strike operations inside Russia, with a recent wave of 600 drones targeting Moscow and repeated strikes on Wildberries logistics centers. Two separate attacks on Russian territory this week killed at least 16 people, including one child.
