Armed Drone Approaches Romania’s Neptun Deep Gas Field

Romanian F-16 jet destroyed an explosive-laden sea drone near the Neptun Deep platform, the second such incident at the Black Sea field in ten days.

A Romanian fighter jet destroyed an armed sea drone that drifted within metres of the Neptun Deep offshore gas platform on Thursday, marking the second security incident at the Black Sea field in just ten days.

A commercial vessel first spotted the drone near the Neptun Alpha platform and alerted Romanian authorities. The coast guard notified the Ministry of National Defence of the drone’s presence approximately 80 miles east of Constanta. NATO handed coordination of the military response to Romania, and a crisis management team led by the Romanian president ordered two F-16 jets scrambled to intercept.

One of the two fighters dispatched to the scene carried out the destruction using its onboard cannon. The drone was confirmed to have been carrying explosives. On August 11, Romanian forces had already intercepted two Russian-made Gerbera-type drones drifting in the water near the same gas field.

Europe’s Largest undeveloped gas field under threat

Neptun Deep, located at the eastern edge of Romania’s exclusive economic zone, is the country’s most significant offshore gas resource. Estimated reserves stand at around 100 billion cubic metres of gas, and first production is expected to begin in 2027. The field is being developed by OMV Petrom and Romgaz as a cornerstone of Romania’s effort to reduce reliance on imported energy and supply gas to neighbours across Central and Southeastern Europe.

The repeated incursions raise serious questions about the vulnerability of critical energy infrastructure in the Black Sea. Military analysts note that the drones appeared to be deliberately aimed at the gas platforms rather than drifting aimlessly, suggesting a coordinated effort to threaten Europe’s newest major gas asset before it even begins production.

Energy security concerns intensify

The incident comes as Europe grapples with ongoing disruptions to energy supply routes amid the Iran conflict’s impact on the Strait of Hormuz. Neptun Deep was seen as a strategic hedge against supply instability, with Romania positioned to become a regional gas supplier. The repeated drone incursions could delay investment timelines and raise insurance costs for operators in the Black Sea basin.

Romania has called for enhanced NATO presence in the Black Sea region to protect energy infrastructure. The country’s defence ministry stated that its military will continue monitoring the area and responding to any threats against critical offshore assets. The incidents also highlight broader concerns about the militarisation of the Black Sea, where Russia, Turkey, NATO, and regional states maintain overlapping interests.
