Apple has launched its first-ever 2-nanometer processor, the M6 chip, debuting it in a refreshed Mac Mini that starts at $899 and delivers what the company calls the world’s fastest single-threaded CPU performance.
The surprise announcement, made Monday without a traditional launch event, also introduced the M5 Ultra as Apple’s most powerful chip ever, shipping in the updated Mac Studio. Together, the two processors represent Apple’s most significant silicon leap since the transition from Intel, pushing deeper into AI compute capabilities while shrinking transistor sizes to a new industry milestone.
M6: 2nm Arrives on the Desktop
The M6 is Apple’s first chip manufactured using TSMC’s 2-nanometer process technology, a node that packs significantly more transistors into each square millimeter than the 3nm process used in last year’s M5. The result is a chip that Apple says delivers up to 1.2 times faster multithreaded performance than the M5 and up to 2.4 times faster than the M1, the processor that launched Apple’s silicon transition in 2020.
The M6 features a new 12-core CPU complex built around three types of processing cores: two “super cores” dedicated to single-threaded workloads, four performance cores for multithreaded tasks, and six efficiency cores for lighter background processes. This three-tier design is a departure from Apple’s previous two-cluster approach and allows the chip to allocate power more precisely depending on the task.
Graphics performance gets a parallel upgrade with a 12-core GPU that includes Neural Accelerators in every core, enabling faster on-device AI inference. The chip also features a dual 16-core Neural Engine, which Apple claims delivers up to twice the peak AI compute compared to previous generations. The system framework can now activate both Neural Engines simultaneously, speeding up machine learning model execution.
Memory support goes up to 32 gigabytes of unified memory with up to 170 gigabytes per second of bandwidth, a 10 percent increase over the M5. Apple says the M6 also supports Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 through its custom N1 wireless chip, while the base Mac Mini model now includes 2.5 gigabit Ethernet as standard, with a 10 gigabit option available as an upgrade.
M5 Ultra: Apple’s First Quad-Die Chip
The Mac Studio gets the M5 Ultra, which represents a structural shift in how Apple builds its highest-end processors. The chip uses Apple’s UltraFusion interconnect technology to combine four separate dies into a single package, making it the company’s first quad-die architecture. Previous Ultra chips, including the M3 Ultra, used a two-die design.
The M5 Ultra offers up to a 36-core CPU with 12 super cores and 24 performance cores, delivering up to 1.25 times higher single-threaded performance and 1.3 times higher multithreaded performance compared to last year’s M3 Ultra. The GPU scales up to 80 cores, and the chip supports up to 512 gigabytes of unified memory with 1.2 terabytes per second of bandwidth, which Apple says is 50 percent faster than the M3 Ultra.
The enhanced memory bandwidth and capacity make the M5 Ultra particularly suited for large language model inference and professional creative workloads. Apple highlighted performance gains in tools like LM Studio, where the Mac Mini with M5 Pro (an 18-core CPU variant also announced) delivers up to 8.5 times faster LLM prompt processing compared to the M2 Pro Mac Mini.
Strategic Timing and Competitive Context
The launch comes at a critical moment in the chip industry. Nvidia is expected to report its quarterly earnings later Tuesday, with analysts watching closely for signals about AI infrastructure demand. Intel and AMD are both preparing their next-generation desktop processors, and Qualcomm has been pushing into the PC market with its Snapdragon X Elite chips.
Apple’s decision to skip the M6 Pro and M6 Max entirely, as reported by Gadgets 360 in June, suggests the company is prioritizing its M7 development with a focus on AI capabilities. The M6 serves as a bridge generation, bringing 2nm manufacturing benefits to the mainstream Mac lineup while Apple prepares its next leap.
