Bitcoin Clears $81,000 as Privacy Coins Run Hot

Bitcoin pushed through the level that capped its rally since late August, with zcash up 16% and dash 19% in a day. Futures positioning turned bullish as ETF inflows keep building.

Bitcoin cleared $81,309 overnight, the level that had capped its rally since late August, and held near $81,060 into Friday morning. Privacy coins did the real running: zcash gained 16.55% in 24 hours, dash 19.24% and monero 5.89%, according to CoinDesk, with no obvious catalyst behind any of them.

The move matters for chart watchers. Late August put a ceiling on bitcoin around $81,300, and repeated attempts to break it failed. Clearing it changes the picture. Ether added 4.52%, XRP 5.58% and Solana 3.04% over the same 24 hours, so the gains were broad rather than a bitcoin-only push.

Positioning turned bullish

Derivatives data points to conviction behind the move. The long-short taker volume ratio for bitcoin futures stood at 51.4% to 48.5%, tilted bullish, which matches a price that has topped $80,000 with intent. Traders taking liquidity from the order book were buying, not selling.

Dash was the strongest performer of the session, up about 25% at one point and trading above $53, with open interest up roughly 20%. Rising open interest alongside a rising price confirms new longs, not short covering. Weekly gains on dash reached 30% on $204 million of volume. On one altcoin token, open interest jumped almost 39% while funding turned negative at -0.0118%, meaning shorts were paying to hold positions as the price climbed. Negative funding during a rally is unusual. It means derivatives traders leaned short even as spot buyers pushed the price up, a setup that can fuel sharp squeezes when shorts give in.

No clear reason, and that is worth noting

Nothing in the news cycle explains why privacy coins specifically ran so hard. Zcash pushed past $1,000 in the past week, drawing public backing from traders including Arthur Hayes. Dash had already climbed 85% since mid-August before this latest leg. The pattern looks like momentum chasing, where one coin’s breakout pulls the whole sector higher, rather than a response to any single event.

Regulators tend to notice when privacy coins rally. Exchanges in several jurisdictions delisted monero and zcash in past years under government pressure, and renewed strength in the sector usually revives the compliance debate. For now, the buying is coming from futures markets and spot desks, not from any announced change in listing policy.

Macro backdrop and flows

Traditional markets offered little resistance. Gold rose 0.17% to $4,480 and silver 0.25% to $67.11. The dollar index sat flat at 99.063 and Nasdaq 100 futures added 0.42%. The macro picture was quiet enough that the crypto move stands on its own.

Flows support the price too. US spot bitcoin ETFs pulled $3.8 billion over their strongest three-week stretch of 2026, including $986.9 million in the latest week, per CoinDesk. That is a striking contrast with the first half of the year, when 2026 net totals for the funds sat in negative territory. Institutional buyers faded the summer weakness and kept buying through the dip below $80,000, and the weekend rally is the first real price payoff of that streak.

Asset 24h move Level
Bitcoin Cleared $81,309, eased 0.22% since midnight About $81,060
Zcash +16.55% Above $1,000 this week
Dash +19.24%, up 30% on the week About $53
Monero +5.89% Steady uptrend since August
Ether +4.52% Higher
XRP +5.58% Near $1.40

The next test is simple. Bitcoin either holds above the old ceiling and turns it into support, or the breakout fails and the range reasserts itself. CoinDesk analysts flagged the $82,000 to $83,000 area as the next target if the level holds, with a possible liquidity sweep above recent highs before any deeper pullback. Past attempts at this range failed within days, so one clean daily close above $81,300 is the minimum bar before calling the resistance broken.
