Chadian President Mahamat Idriss Deby on Friday pardoned jailed opposition leader and former Prime Minister Succes Masra along with eight other political prisoners, a move that Masra says he hopes will open the door to national reconciliation.
Masra, who founded the opposition party Les Transformateurs and challenged Deby in the 2024 presidential election, had been serving a 20-year prison sentence handed down in August 2025. He was convicted of inciting violence and complicity to murder in what Human Rights Watch called a politically motivated trial.
In his first public remarks after his release, Masra called for reconciliation and dialogue across Chad’s deeply divided political landscape. The pardon extends to eight other opposition leaders who had been detained alongside him.
From Exile to Prime Minister to Prison
Masra’s political trajectory has been dramatic. He returned from exile in November 2023 under a reconciliation deal signed in Kinshasa and was appointed Prime Minister in January 2024, five months ahead of the presidential election. Deby won that contest with just over 60 percent of the vote in a ballot boycotted by most opposition parties.
Masra was removed from his post after the election and subsequently faced charges related to protests that turned violent. His sentencing drew international condemnation, with rights groups describing the trial as an attempt to silence political dissent.
A Fragile Political Opening
The pardon comes at a sensitive moment for Chad, which has been under military-led governance since Deby seized power following the death of his father, Idriss Deby Itno, in 2021. The younger Deby has faced persistent criticism for cracking down on opposition voices while promising a return to civilian rule.
Masra’s release could signal a cautious political opening, though analysts note that pardons in Chad have historically been used to manage international pressure rather than mark genuine shifts toward pluralism. The opposition leader’s call for reconciliation will test whether the regime is willing to engage in meaningful dialogue or whether this remains a cosmetic gesture.
France 24 aired an interview with Masra on Saturday in which he discussed Chad’s political situation and his plans going forward. The former Prime Minister has not yet indicated whether he intends to resume active political participation.
