Estonian authorities are investigating whether Russia was involved in an arson attack on a building used by defense manufacturer Milrem Robotics in Tallinn, the countrys prime minister said on Monday.

The fire broke out overnight into Saturday at a Milrem building on Betooni Street in Lasnamae, a district of the Estonian capital. Prime Minister Kristen Michal said one line of inquiry being examined is whether the blaze was an act of sabotage directed by Moscow. One version being checked is that it may have been an act of sabotage and that Russia was behind the arson, Michal wrote in a Facebook post, according to Bloomberg.

Milrem Robotics: A Key NATO Defense Supplier

Milrem Robotics is a leading European developer of autonomous combat vehicles and unmanned ground vehicles, several of which have been supplied to Ukraine through French military aid programs. The companys THeMIS platform has been deployed in multiple NATO member states armed forces, making it a high-value target in the context of the broader conflict.

Margo Palloson, Director General of Estonias Internal Security Service, urged stronger physical and digital protection for critical infrastructure following the incident. He characterized Moscow as a long-term danger to the Baltic nation. Russia represents a long-term existential threat to Estonia, Palloson declared, while noting that the countrys overall threat level had not been changed.

Pattern of Suspected Russian Operations Across Europe

The investigation comes amid a pattern of suspected Russian sabotage operations across Europe. In recent months, Baltic and Nordic countries have reported a series of arson attacks, cyber incidents, and infrastructure disruptions attributed to Russian intelligence services or their proxies. The incidents have prompted several NATO allies to bolster security around defense installations and critical infrastructure.

Estonia, a NATO member that shares a 294-kilometer border with Russia, has been among the most vocal critics of the Kremlins war in Ukraine. The country has supplied significant military aid to Kyiv and hosts a NATO battlegroup as part of the alliances enhanced forward presence on its eastern flank.

Prosecutors have not yet established Russian responsibility for the fire, and the damage assessment at the Milrem building remains ongoing. The investigation is being led by Estonias Internal Security Service in coordination with national prosecutors. The case has drawn attention from allied intelligence services given the strategic importance of Milrem’s work in autonomous defense systems.
