France Expels Two Iran Diplomats Over Embassy Assault

Paris expelled two Iranian diplomats after Tehran’s security services detained and interrogated two French embassy staffers in what France called a premeditated act of intimidation.

France announced the expulsion of two Iranian diplomats on Tuesday after Tehran’s security services detained and interrogated two French embassy employees in Tehran, with Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot calling their treatment “intolerable.”

The diplomatic row dates back to July 19, when two French Embassy staffers in Tehran, including the cultural attache, were questioned for several hours and “beaten,” according to Barrot. Paris accused Iranian security services of carrying out a “premeditated and deliberate” act of intimidation in “flagrant violation” of diplomatic protections under the Vienna Convention.

Paris and Tehran Trade Accusations

France summoned Iran’s charge d’affaires two days after the incident and warned of consequences. Barrot wrote on X that the two French diplomats were “scandalously and deliberately assaulted,” saying the incident was especially outrageous “because France stands alongside the Iranian people.” Tehran disputed the account, claiming the French diplomats violated the Vienna Convention through activities it considered interference in Iranian affairs. Iran subsequently declared both French diplomats persona non grata.

French foreign ministry spokesperson Pascal Confavreux accused Tehran of making “completely false accusations” against the diplomats and “fabricating an interference case” to justify its actions. The back-and-forth marks a sharp escalation in relations between Paris and Tehran at a time when broader Middle East tensions remain elevated.

Ties Into Wider Iran Tensions

The diplomatic expulsion comes amid heightened tensions across the Middle East. The United States recently declared its economic operation against Iran the “most crushing” ever launched, while the UAE imposed an indefinite trade embargo on Tehran after accusing it of firing ballistic missiles at the Gulf nation. France’s move signals that European nations are also hardening their stance toward Tehran beyond the framework of the US-led campaign.

France had previously maintained a relatively measured posture toward Iran compared to Washington, keeping diplomatic channels open even as the US escalated its economic and military pressure. The embassy assault appears to have crossed a threshold for Paris, which has historically positioned itself as a potential mediator in Middle Eastern conflicts.

The expulsion also comes as Germany’s Bundestag debated sanctions against Israeli officials over Gaza killing remarks, reflecting the complex diplomatic balancing act European nations face amid multiple overlapping crises in the region. The incident may push the EU toward a more unified stance on Iran as member states grapple with both security threats and humanitarian concerns.
