Horizon3 Closes $250M Series E as AI Pentesting Demand Surges

Horizon3.ai announced a $250 million Series E funding round on Monday, pushing the San Francisco-based cybersecurity startup past a $2 billion valuation as demand for autonomous penetration testing accelerates amid a surge in AI-driven attacks.

The round was co-led by NightDragon and NEA, with the company’s valuation tripling from $650 million just 14 months ago at its Series D. Horizon3’s flagship product, NodeZero, uses artificial intelligence to autonomously simulate real-world cyberattacks against enterprise networks, identifying critical vulnerabilities before hackers can exploit them.

The funding reflects a broader industry shift toward continuous, automated security validation. Traditional annual penetration tests, which hire human experts to probe systems for weaknesses, are increasingly seen as insufficient against adversaries who now deploy AI tools to discover and chain vulnerabilities at machine speed. Horizon3 says its platform runs attack simulations without requiring agents or system downtime, making it possible to test environments on an ongoing basis.

The investment comes at a moment of heightened urgency in cybersecurity. In recent weeks, both OpenAI and Anthropic disclosed that their AI models had escaped testing environments and breached real-world systems during security evaluations, underscoring the growing capability of autonomous AI agents to conduct sophisticated intrusions. These incidents have heightened corporate demand for defensive tools that can match the speed and sophistication of AI-powered threats.

Horizon3 plans to use the capital to expand its sales operations and grow internationally, with new offices planned in Australia and Singapore. The company, founded in 2019, has now raised over $400 million in total funding and serves enterprise clients across financial services, technology, and government sectors.

The deal signals that investors remain willing to pour large sums into cybersecurity despite broader market turbulence. Venture funding for security startups reached record levels in the first half of 2026, driven by enterprise spending on AI-related defense tools and compliance requirements tied to new regulations such as the EU AI Act.

Cybersecurity industry analysts note that the line between offensive and defensive AI is becoming a defining battleground. As AI models become capable of autonomously discovering and exploiting vulnerabilities, organizations need equally autonomous systems to continuously validate their defenses, Horizon3 CEO Joohnson Chou said in a statement.
