iPhone 18 Pro Hits Stores With First 2nm Phone Chip

Apple's iPhone 18 Pro lands Friday with the A20 Pro, the first 2nm chip in a phone, a smaller Dynamic Island and the biggest camera overhaul in years.

The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max go on sale Friday, bringing Apple’s first 2-nanometer smartphone chip to customers who pre-ordered starting Sept. 12. The A20 Pro, built on TSMC’s N2 node, is the headline change: a 6-core CPU, 7-core GPU and a 32-core Neural Engine split across two 16-core blocks. Apple claims up to 20% faster CPU performance and up to 40% faster graphics than the A19 Pro in last year’s iPhone 17 Pro, along with a 50% jump in memory bandwidth.

Pre-orders opened Saturday and the phones arrive in stores and to customers Friday. The launch closes a short cycle: the phones were announced Sept. 9, pre-orders ran for six days, and shelves get stock within two weeks of the keynote. Apple has kept this compressed cadence for several generations now, trading the old month-long announce-to-ship gap for a fast turn that limits leak damage and concentrates demand into a single weekend.

What the 2nm node actually buys

Process shrinks usually deliver either more performance or better efficiency, and Apple’s messaging this year leans on both. The chip uses nanosheet transistors, the successor to the FinFET designs that carried the industry through the last decade. Benchmarks reported earlier this month showed the CPU gains concentrated in sustained workloads rather than short bursts, which tracks with the other big hardware change.

That change is thermal. The A20 Pro uses custom packaging borrowed from Apple’s M-series silicon, placing the die side by side with memory instead of stacked, which removes memory from the chip’s thermal path. That lets the A20 Pro attach directly to a next-generation vapor chamber. In plain terms, the phone can hold peak performance longer without throttling, which matters more for gaming and on-device AI inference than any single-core benchmark number.

Tom’s Hardware notes the same A20 Pro also powers the iPhone Duo, Apple’s new premium model starting at $1,999 for 256GB and reaching 2TB of storage, which pre-orders Oct. 16 and launches Oct. 23. Sharing the silicon across both lines puts the most expensive component in the company’s catalog into two very different price tiers, which spreads the N2 wafer commitment across more units and hedges TSMC yield risk.

The node timeline itself is worth a glance. Apple moved from TSMC’s first-generation 3nm in the A17 Pro through two refined 3nm generations, and the jump to N2 is the first full node transition since 2023. TSMC’s 2nm capacity is constrained industry-wide, and Apple has historically bought early allocation at premium prices to keep rivals off the node for at least a year.

Cameras get the biggest rework in years

The Pro lineup introduces variable aperture, a first for an iPhone, paired with new manual controls and upgraded video features. Reviewers who handled the phone early called it the most substantial camera overhaul Apple has shipped in years. The camera system also brings a new approach to photo authenticity, part of the industry-wide response to AI-generated imagery and content provenance concerns. Apple’s exhibition putting three photographers behind the new camera system earlier this week was a marketing push, but it also signaled that computational photography is no longer the whole story: optical hardware is back in the conversation.

Design changes are smaller but visible. The Dynamic Island shrinks again, and the Pro models come in new color options including a deep black finish. Early unboxing videos show the smaller cutout and revised antenna lines.

Modem and connectivity

The Pro models carry Apple’s C2 modem chip, the successor to C1X. Apple says C2 delivers meaningfully faster uploads while consuming 15% less energy, and adds mmWave support in the US. The company also touts AI-powered improvements to cellular quality and reliability. Apple has been moving its modem story forward slowly since it started shipping its own designs, and C2 is another step away from Qualcomm dependence.

Siri AI, the reworked assistant Apple has been rolling out through the year, ships as a core feature of the lineup, with the 32-core Neural Engine doing the on-device lifting. The dual 16-core block design exists specifically to keep inference workloads running locally rather than bouncing to cloud servers, which is both a privacy pitch and a cost one.

The memory cost problem nobody advertised

There is a supply-side wrinkle behind the glossy launch. MacRumors flagged a DigiTimes report that Apple has agreed to pay Samsung 30% to 40% more for RAM and storage chips starting in the first quarter of 2027, citing Chinese publication Jiemian News. AI data centers are eating the memory supply, and Consumer Reports this week documented the spillover into laptop, console and even car prices, with analysts at Gartner and IDC expecting the squeeze to last well into 2027. Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron have shifted a huge share of memory production to high-bandwidth chips for AI accelerators, meeting only about half the current high-bandwidth demand.

Apple is absorbing the increases for now rather than passing them to buyers at launch, but the 2027 pricing agreements lock in higher component costs for the next product cycle. When a cutting-edge chip company like AMD re-releases a three-year-old gaming CPU because new memory is too expensive, as happened with the Ryzen 7 5800X3D in June, the pressure on everyone’s bill of materials is real.

Should you upgrade

For buyers on an iPhone 15 Pro or older, the A20 Pro’s combination of the 2nm node, vapor chamber cooling and camera rework makes a defensible upgrade. For iPhone 17 Pro owners, the honest answer is that the gains are incremental: faster chip, better thermals, smaller island, new colors. The variable aperture camera is the one feature that changes what the phone can do rather than how fast it does it.

The launch also sets up the rest of Apple’s fall. The iPhone Duo lands next month at nearly double the Pro Max price, aimed at buyers who want the 2nm chip with extreme storage, and the Apple Watch S12 ships alongside the Pro phones. Apple’s September, in other words, is running on schedule, with the memory bill coming due next year.
