Russia launched one of its largest combined missile and drone barrages against Ukraine overnight on July 30, killing at least 10 civilians and wounding more than 50 across multiple regions, as a Russian cruise missile crossed into Polish airspace and prompted NATO to scramble fighter jets.
President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russia fired more than 70 missiles, a significant number of them ballistic, and more than 280 attack drones in the coordinated assault. Ukrainian air defenses intercepted over 260 of the drones, but the scale of the barrage overwhelmed defenses in several areas.
At least 10 Ukrainian regions came under attack, including the capital Kyiv, the western city of Lviv, the Dnipropetrovsk region, and the Poltava region. In Kyiv, a 31-year-old man was killed and two others wounded after ballistic missiles struck the Sviatoshynskyi district, sparking fires in a five-story non-residential building and a garage complex. More than 56,000 residents sheltered in the capitals subway stations throughout the night.
In the Dnipropetrovsk region, near Zelenskys hometown of Kryvyi Rih, the attack inflicted the heaviest loss of life. A family of 10 foster children and their parents were killed when a ballistic missile destroyed their home. The victims included 47-year-old Artem Voronov, his 41-year-old wife Olena, and seven of their 10 children aged 6 to 17, along with their 18-month-old grandson. Two other children were pulled alive from the rubble. ‘It was an ordinary home, blown to smithereens by a ballistic missile,’ Zelensky said on social media.
In Lviv, a cruise missile strike injured more than 30 people, including children ages 6, 13, and 15, as residential high-rises on Paton and Vyhovskoho streets caught fire. Rescue crews continued searching through the rubble, with Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovy confirming that people remained trapped beneath collapsed buildings.
The Russian Defense Ministry stated that it targeted Ukrainian air bases, arms factories, military telecommunications facilities, and logistics infrastructure, including drone factories and storage depots. The assault came as Ukraine faces a critical shortage of Western-supplied antiballistic missile defenses, with the parallel Iran war draining stockpiles of US-made Patriot interceptor missiles.
NATO confirmed that a Russian cruise missile entered Polish airspace during the onslaught and landed in a rural area, causing no injuries or damage. The alliance scrambled fighter jets in response. NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte called it ‘yet another reckless act by Russia and a dangerous consequence of its war against Ukraine.’ Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk described it as ‘a very serious incident’ but added that there were no reasons to believe that Poland was the target.
The attack came just two days after Zelensky met with US President Donald Trump to plead for faster deliveries of Patriot air defense systems. Trump has promised to grant Ukraine licenses to produce its own Patriot interceptors, but production could take many months. Zelensky warned earlier this week that Russia was preparing another mass aerial assault and urged allies to accelerate deliveries. ‘Given the critical shortage of air defense missiles from our partners, our warriors are accomplishing truly incredible things,’ he said.
Last month was the deadliest for civilians in Ukraine since April 2022, according to the United Nations, as Moscow has intensified its long-range strikes against populated areas. The war, now in its fifth year, shows no signs of de-escalation, with both sides continuing to strike deep behind each others lines.
