President Volodymyr Zelensky reported on August 30 that Russia launched approximately 800 jet-powered attack drones over the previous four days, marking a dramatic escalation in Moscow’s aerial campaign as a sustained assault on Ukrainian cities entered its fifth consecutive day. The figure was part of a broader weekly tally in which Russia deployed nearly 2,000 attack drones, more than 1,600 glide bombs, and 31 missiles, including North Korean ballistic missiles, against Ukrainian targets over the past seven days. Zelensky delivered the assessment during his evening address as explosions from a fresh drone wave struck central Kyiv beginning around 12:30 a.m. local time on August 31. Kyiv Independent journalists on the ground confirmed hearing explosions and sustained air defense fire throughout the night. The scale of the jet-powered drone deployment represents a significant shift in Russian tactics. Moscow has increasingly deployed the Geran-4 and Geran-5 models, which can travel at speeds up to 600 kilometers per hour, more than three times faster than the piston-powered Shahed drones that formed the backbone of Russia’s earlier aerial attacks. The speed advantage has made interception far more difficult for Ukraine’s air defense systems, which were calibrated against slower-moving targets.
A New Challenge for Air Defenses
“The most difficult task is intercepting the jet-powered ones. Now, it is mainly our combat aircraft that protect against them,” Zelensky told reporters, acknowledging that traditional ground-based air defense systems have struggled to engage the faster drones. The reliance on fighter jets for drone interception places additional strain on Ukraine’s already stretched air force, which must balance patrol missions with frontline support duties. The Geran-4 carries a 50-kilogram warhead and can strike targets up to 850 kilometers from its launch site, though at a shorter range than the original Shahed. Intelligence assessments indicate Russia designed the Geran-4 airframe specifically around a Chinese-made turbojet engine, with structural reinforcements to handle sustained high-speed flight. A sub-variant equipped with electro-optical guidance was identified in mid-2026, allowing the drone to autonomously acquire and strike its target even if communications are lost during the terminal phase. The Institute for the Study of War assessed in August that the drone also carries a fixed wide-angle camera, potentially for terrain reference or detection of approaching interceptors. In a shift that has alarmed residents across the capital, Moscow has begun launching daytime kamikaze drone attacks against Kyiv, breaking from the pattern of nighttime-only strikes that characterized earlier phases of the war. The tactic keeps the capital in a perpetual state of alert, with air raid alarms cycling on and off throughout the day and night. Homes, businesses, and civilian infrastructure have been hit in the drawn-out waves. “Right now, Russia’s tactic is to wear down Ukraine and Ukrainians, first and foremost our people,” Zelensky said in his address, framing the attacks as a deliberate strategy of exhaustion rather than precision targeting.
Ukraine Races to Develop Countermeasures
Ukraine has tested four potential interceptor solutions against the jet-powered drones, Defense Minister Yevhen Khmara told reporters on August 29. “Four companies have developed the relevant interceptor drones, and one company has the most successful technology,” Zelensky said. He set a target of bringing the interception rate to well above 90 percent by autumn, when Russia historically intensifies its long-range strikes ahead of the winter season. The jet-powered Geran-4 was purpose-built to defeat Ukraine’s low-cost interceptor drones, which had proven effective against the slower piston-powered Shaheds. The interceptor program, led by companies including Wild Hornets with their Sting system, had driven Russia to redesign its drone fleet entirely. Wild Hornets’ Sting interceptor reached speeds of 315 kilometers per hour and had shot down over 200 Shaheds and Gerberas before the jet-powered variants appeared in combat. Ukrainian interceptor makers have said they are developing faster models built specifically to run down the jets, with some shifting from drone interceptors toward missile-based solutions. Russian production of the jet-powered models has accelerated sharply in 2026. Defense outlet Militarnyi reported in June that Russia had increased its use of jet-powered strike drones eightfold, launching approximately 1,400 units since the start of the year. Satellite imagery published by Ukrainska Pravda in April showed expanded launch infrastructure at sites in Oryol Oblast and Tatarstan, with Russia building additional launch pads at its Tsymbulova base.
