A catastrophic flash flood triggered by a glacial collapse near the Tibet border has killed at least 538 people in Nepal, with 1,924 still missing as helicopter rescue operations were suspended after a barrier lake overflowed.
The disaster struck the Rasuwa district along the Bhote Koshi river on August 26, sending a wall of water, mud and debris through Himalayan villages and tourist routes. The flood washed away bridges, roads and entire settlements along the river corridor that connects Nepal to the Tibetan plateau, one of the most popular overland routes for pilgrims and trekkers heading to Mount Kailash in Tibet.
Nepal’s home ministry confirmed the revised death toll on August 28, up sharply from initial figures of 165 dead reported two days earlier. The number of missing surged to 1,924 as rescue teams expanded their search into previously unreachable areas. The disaster is now one of the deadliest natural catastrophes in Nepal’s recent history, rivaling the 2024 monsoon floods that killed over 200 people across the country.
Barrier Lake Overflow Forces Rescue Halt
Rescue operations were thrown into crisis when a barrier lake formed by flood debris suddenly overflowed on August 27, sending another surge of water downstream along the Bhote Koshi. Helicopter operations were suspended as authorities assessed the safety of the area. The barrier lake had been blocking the river since the initial disaster, creating a secondary flood risk that emergency teams had been monitoring around the clock.
Nepal’s disaster management authority said helicopter rescue operations have been suspended as the barrier lake overflows. Ground teams continued searching on foot in accessible areas, but damaged roads and washed-out bridges severely limited their reach into the worst-hit zones. 384 Foreign Tourists Among the Missing
A tourism board spokesperson said 384 foreign tourists were uncontactable in the aftermath of the flood. Among them were 133 pilgrims from India traveling to Mount Kailash, a sacred site for Hindus, Buddhists and Jains. Also missing were 47 people from the United States, 34 from Australia, 33 from Britain and 24 from Canada, the spokesperson said. The total number of local Nepali citizens among the missing was not immediately clear but was believed to be substantially higher.
Three Americans were confirmed among the missing by NBC News, citing local authorities. Many of the foreign nationals had been part of organized tour groups following the Bhote Koshi route, one of the main overland access points between Nepal and China’s Tibet Autonomous Region. The route, which passes through dramatic gorges and suspension bridges, is normally crowded with tourists during the peak pilgrimage season.
Earthquake May Have Triggered Glacial Collapse
Preliminary analysis pointed to an earthquake-triggered glacial collapse as the likely cause of the flood. A magnitude 5.0 earthquake was recorded near the area on August 25, the day before the disaster. The tremor appears to have destabilized glacial ice and rock formations above the river, sending a massive volume of debris downstream in what witnesses described as a wall of black water.
Climate scientists warned that rising temperatures in the Hindu Kush Himalayan region are accelerating glacial melt and increasing the risk of glacial lake outburst floods, known as GLOFs. ICIMOD, the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development based in Kathmandu, said such events were increasing at an unprecedented pace across the mountain range that spans eight countries from Afghanistan to Pakistan.
Nepal’s monsoon season, which runs from June to September, compounds the risk by adding heavy rainfall to already destabilized glacial terrain. The country sits along one of the most seismically active zones on Earth, making the combination of earthquakes and glacial instability a recurring threat to communities in high-altitude river valleys throughout the Himalayas.
Infrastructure Destroyed Along Border Route
The flood destroyed critical infrastructure along the Bhote Koshi corridor, including the bridge at Kodari that served as a key crossing point between Nepal and Tibet. Roads were washed away across multiple districts, cutting off communities and complicating the delivery of emergency supplies and medical aid to survivors.
Power projects along the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli rivers, accounting for roughly 900 megawatts of generating capacity, were also put at risk by the flooding. The damage to Nepal’s electricity infrastructure could take months to repair, adding energy insecurity to the humanitarian crisis unfolding in the affected regions.
Nepal’s army deployed helicopters and ground units to the affected areas, but the scale of the disaster and the difficult mountain terrain slowed the response considerably. Communities along the river corridor had little warning before the wall of water arrived, and many villages were swept away entirely. International offers of assistance were being coordinated through Nepal’s foreign ministry, with India and China both pledging search and rescue support.
