North Korea launched its second missile in less than a week and warned of “a new level of a deterrent” to counter upcoming US-South Korean joint military exercises, sharply escalating tensions on the Korean Peninsula just days before the drills are set to begin.
The latest launch was detected by South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff and Japan’s Defense Ministry, with the missile flying toward the East Sea. The test came just days after an earlier launch on August 11 that Pyongyang subsequently described as a hypersonic missile test. North Korean state media KCNA reported the missiles were launched northeastward from the Ryokpho District in Pyongyang and struck intended targets in North Hamgyong Province.
Diplomatic Statement Threatens Escalation
In a statement released by KCNA on Friday, a spokesperson for North Korea’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the upcoming Ulchi Freedom Shield (UFS) exercise as “a rehearsal for an aggressive war” and accused Washington of openly preparing for military confrontation.
“They are incurring the instability in the Korean Peninsula and other regional countries, which is more serious than before,” the spokesperson said, threatening that the allies would face consequences at “a new level of a deterrent.”
The spokesperson did not elaborate on what specific measures Pyongyang might take, but the language represents a notable escalation in North Korea’s rhetoric ahead of the annual joint exercise.
Ulchi Freedom Shield to Focus on Modern Threats
The Ulchi Freedom Shield exercise is scheduled to run from August 17 to 27 and will involve approximately 18,000 South Korean troops alongside U.S. forces. This year’s drill will incorporate exercises designed to counter drones, GPS disruption, and cyberattacks, reflecting adaptations to North Korea’s evolving military capabilities.
The United Nations Command said the drills aim to enhance combined deterrence and readiness on the peninsula. Colonel Jang Doyoung of South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff confirmed the scale matches previous years, while U.S. Indo-Pacific Command has been coordinating closely with Seoul and Tokyo on force posture.
Analysts at NK News noted that this week’s missile tests represent North Korea’s first ballistic launches in over two months, breaking a period of relative quiet. The combination of the launches, the hypersonic weapons claim, and the escalatory diplomatic statement suggests Pyongyang is seeking to establish leverage ahead of the exercise period.
North Korea has conducted a series of weapons tests throughout 2026, including hypersonic missile launches in January that US and South Korean intelligence agencies assessed may have involved the Hwasong-11E platform, a short- to medium-range system with a wedge-shaped hypersonic glide vehicle first publicly displayed in October 2025.
The latest provocations come as South Korean President Lee Jae Myung separately proposed formal peace talks to end the Korean War during his Liberation Day speech on Saturday, creating a sharp juxtaposition between Seoul’s diplomatic overture and Pyongyang’s military posturing.
