Putin Pulls Ambassador From London as Ties Freeze

Moscow recalls its UK ambassador Andrey Kelin, accusing Britain of taking a path of confrontation as bilateral relations hit their lowest point since the Cold War.

Russia has withdrawn its ambassador from London after months of escalating tensions between Moscow and Britain, with the Kremlin accusing the United Kingdom of pursuing a deliberate path of confrontation.

Andrey Kelin, who served as Russia’s ambassador to the UK since 2019, reportedly left his post in July. Moscow confirmed the move on Saturday, saying Britain’s stance on the Ukraine conflict and recent actions against Russian assets had made normal diplomatic engagement impossible.

Relations ‘Close to Being Frozen’

The ambassador’s departure comes amid what Russian officials describe as the worst bilateral relationship since the Cold War. In a recent interview with the Daily Mail, Kelin said London significantly overestimates its importance in Russian politics, while describing relations between the two capitals as “close to being frozen.”

“The scope and place of Great Britain in Russian politics is not that big. We have other problems of much larger magnitude,” Kelin told the newspaper. He accused the UK of “throwing a lot of mud” in Russia’s direction, adding that this attitude “does not provoke much of an appetite for improving dialogue or relations in Moscow.”

Shadow Fleet Seizure Deepened Rift

The diplomatic rupture accelerated after British forces intercepted and boarded the Russian shadow fleet oil tanker Smyrtos in the English Channel in June 2026, in a six-hour operation involving Royal Marines. The seizure was part of Western efforts to enforce sanctions on Russia’s illicit oil exports.

The UK subsequently announced its largest sanctions package against Russia since the start of the full-scale invasion in 2022, targeting financial institutions, energy companies, and vessels in Moscow’s sanctions-evading fleet. Russia responded with threats of “consequences” for British involvement in the conflict.

Kelin had earlier warned that the UK was more deeply involved in the Ukraine conflict than any other NATO state, citing the presence of British military specialists involved in launching missile strikes on Russian targets.

No Replacement Named

Russia has not announced a replacement for Kelin, leaving the embassy in London without a permanent ambassador for the first time in years. The move mirrors diplomatic downgrades seen between Russia and several other Western nations since the invasion of Ukraine, though the direct recall of an ambassador goes further than the expulsions that characterized earlier rounds of diplomatic tensions.

The UK’s Foreign Office declined to comment on the withdrawal. Analysts say the decision signals that Moscow sees little prospect of improved relations with London while the war in Ukraine continues and Britain maintains its role as one of Kyiv’s most active military supporters.
