Russian Barrage Kills 8, Injures 57 Across Eight Ukraine Regions

Russian forces launched 138 Shahed drones and multiple missiles at Ukraine overnight, killing 8 people and injuring 57 across eight oblasts in a massive overnight barrage.

Russian attacks killed eight people and injured 57 others across Ukraine over the past day, with a deadly strike on an oil tanker truck in Odesa Oblast and a massive overnight barrage of 138 Shahed-type drones and multiple missiles, Ukrainian authorities said on August 12.

In Odesa Oblast on August 11, Russian forces struck a truck carrying oil residue, and the resulting flames spread to a nearby passenger car, killing two people and injuring three others, regional Governor Oleh Kiper said. The attack highlighted the vulnerability of civilian logistics infrastructure in the southern region.

Overnight on August 12, Russian forces launched an Iskander-M ballistic missile, an anti-radiation Kh-31P missile, Kh-35 guided air-launched missiles, and 138 Shahed-type drones, the Ukrainian Air Force reported. The main targets were Odesa and Sumy oblasts. Air defenses intercepted 112 drones over northern, southern, and eastern Ukraine, while missile and drone strikes hit 16 locations and falling debris was reported at two additional sites.

In Kherson Oblast, Russian forces targeted 33 settlements including the regional capital, killing two people and injuring 14 others, the local military administration said. In Sumy Oblast, two men aged 61 and 62 were killed in separate communities, with four others injured. Donetsk Oblast saw one person killed in Druzhkivka and 14 injured across the region.

Zaporizhzhia Oblast reported one killed and nine injured, while Kharkiv Oblast saw eight people wounded including a 15-year-old boy. Two people were injured in Chernihiv Oblast, two in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast’s Nikopol district, and a 65-year-old man was hospitalized in Kyiv Oblast’s Brovary district.

The scale of the overnight drone barrage, with 138 Shaheds launched in a single wave, reflects Russia’s continued reliance on cheap Iranian-designed drones to overwhelm Ukrainian air defenses while simultaneously deploying precision ballistic and cruise missiles. Ukrainian interceptors shot down 112 of the drones, an 81 percent rate, but the sheer volume means some inevitably penetrate.

The attacks came as Ukraine faces growing concerns about interceptor shortages, with Zelensky recently calling on allies to accelerate deliveries of Patriot and other air-defense missile supplies. The overnight strikes targeted critical infrastructure and civilian areas across a vast geographic area spanning from the northern border with Russia to the southern Black Sea coast.
