Polish authorities are investigating a crater near the city of Lublin after what officials believe was a Russian cruise missile violated Polish airspace during Moscow’s massive overnight bombardment of Ukraine, raising fresh tensions between NATO and Russia.
The crater, measuring 10 meters (33 feet) in diameter, was discovered in a field in Tarnawa Kolonia, approximately 80 kilometers (50 miles) from the Ukrainian border. Local police reported that residents heard a large explosion that rattled windows around 4:00 a.m. local time (0200 GMT), after which authorities quickly discovered debris from an unidentified object.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk traveled to the site accompanied by his defense and interior ministers. Writing on X before departing, Tusk stated: “During the Russian massive missile attack on western Ukraine, a violation of Polish airspace occurred. In connection with this, I have convened a coordination team.”
In Lublin, Tusk told reporters: “Everything points to it being a Russian Kh-101 cruise missile, but we do not wish to preempt the results of a thorough investigation.” Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha wrote on X that a Russian Kh-101 cruise missile had crossed into Poland and violated NATO airspace.
“This is yet another clear demonstration that strengthening Ukraine’s air defense now is urgent and serves as a guarantee for the protection of the entire Euro-Atlantic community,” Sybiha said. Russian jets, drones, and missiles have repeatedly violated the airspace of several NATO member states throughout the conflict.
NATO confirmed it was in close contact with Polish authorities. NATO spokesperson Martin O’Donnell said: “In response to a Russian missile of currently unknown type that entered Polish airspace and later crashed into Polish territory, one of many missiles fired by Russia at Ukraine overnight, NATO and Poland activated their air and ground defenses.”
NATO Supreme Allied Commander Europe, General Alexus G. Grynkewich, spoke with Poland’s Chief of Defense General Wieslaw Kukulan about the response to the incident, which remains under investigation. The general underlined that the military alliance will continue to take all necessary measures to defend NATO territory.
The incident occurred during one of the largest Russian aerial assaults on Ukraine in recent months, targeting not only Kyiv but also western cities such as Lviv, dangerously close to the Polish border. Poland has been on heightened alert since the beginning of the war, with similar incidents previously occurring during the conflict.
Polish military radar detected the violation prior to impact, and authorities scrambled aircraft in response. The investigation continues to determine the exact missile type and origin, though preliminary evidence strongly points to a Russian Kh-101 cruise missile, a standard weapon used in Russia’s strategic bombing campaign against Ukraine.
