Strategy Sells 1,638 Bitcoin for $105M to Fund Buybacks

Strategy, formerly MicroStrategy, sold 1,638 BTC worth $105 million to fund stock buybacks and dividends, marking a sharp reversal for Michael Saylor’s Bitcoin-bullish company.

Strategy, the Michael Saylor-led company formerly known as MicroStrategy, sold 1,638 Bitcoin for approximately $105 million between July 27 and August 2, according to a new SEC filing. The proceeds were used to fund $81 million in STRC preferred stock buybacks and shareholder dividends.

The sale reduced Strategy’s total Bitcoin holdings to 842,138 BTC, down from roughly 843,776 coins a week earlier. The company is now approximately 1,600 coins below where it stood in May, after ten consecutive weeks with no net Bitcoin purchases. The reversal is striking for a firm that built its identity on aggressive Bitcoin accumulation.

Earlier in 2026, Strategy purchased 34,164 BTC for about $2.54 billion at an average price of $74,395 per coin, bringing its total holdings to a peak of 815,061 BTC in April. But the buying spree has since stalled as the company shifted focus toward returning capital to shareholders through its expanding BTC Monetization Program.

The program, which Strategy recently expanded, now allows up to $5 billion in Bitcoin sales to fund reserve management, dividends, interest payments, and securities repurchases. The company also approved a separate $1 billion common stock buyback, signaling a more diversified approach to capital allocation than its earlier all-in Bitcoin strategy.

Saylor addressed the shift in a post on X on August 3, writing: “When I say ‘Never Sell Your Bitcoin,’ I speak as one saver to another. I have never sold mine. Not one satoshi. Strategy is a public company, not my wallet. Since 2020, it has disclosed it may buy or sell BTC to manage capital.”

Despite the sales, Strategy’s Bitcoin holdings remain the largest corporate treasury position in the world. The stock traded at $95.14 on August 3, giving the company a market capitalization of roughly $34.67 billion. Analyst Canaccord raised its price target on Strategy to $224 from $185, suggesting continued confidence in the firm’s long-term approach.

The sell-off comes as Bitcoin markets navigate ongoing volatility tied to macroeconomic uncertainty, including geopolitical tensions and shifting monetary policy expectations. Strategy’s pivot from relentless accumulation to selective divestiture may mark a new phase for the world’s most watched corporate Bitcoin holder.
