Across Ukraine, thousands of desktop 3D printers are producing drone components in hours instead of weeks, transforming how soldiers and volunteers adapt equipment to battlefield demands, a new report from UNITED24 Media reveals.

The shift represents a fundamental change in how Ukraine approaches military manufacturing. What began with individuals printing replacement parts has evolved into a vast decentralized production network, with Czech company PRUSA Research providing much of the hardware and expertise behind the effort.

From Hobby to National Defense

Josef Prusa, the Czech entrepreneur who founded PRUSA Research in Prague, told UNITED24 Media that his company’s technology now supports Ukraine’s frontline operations. PRUSA operates one of the world’s largest desktop 3D printing operations, with hundreds of its own printers running in an automated print farm at its headquarters.

“I used to say I was lazy,” Prusa said. “But really, I was just efficient with my time and effort.”

The company has adapted its consumer-focused printers for military applications, producing drone frames, mounts, and other components that can be manufactured on-site rather than shipped from distant factories. The speed of production gives Ukrainian units a significant advantage, allowing rapid iteration and customization based on battlefield feedback.

Security and Quality in Wartime Production

PRUSA has also addressed intellectual property concerns in wartime manufacturing. The company has implemented measures to ensure that sensitive military designs cannot be easily replicated by adversaries, while maintaining the open-source ethos that made 3D printing accessible in the first place.

The proliferation of 3D printing in Ukraine mirrors a broader trend in modern warfare, where decentralized, agile manufacturing can outpace traditional supply chains. The Pentagon has also invested in similar concepts, funding drone microfactories that can print UAVs in the field under a $30 million contract awarded in May.

Ukrainian drone companies have attracted joint ventures with EU-based companies and interest from US defense firms, as Western militaries seek to replicate Ukraine’s rapid innovation cycle. The combination of civilian volunteers, military need, and commercial technology has created what analysts describe as one of the world’s most dynamic defense innovation ecosystems.
