Vitalik Buterin Proposes Redesign of Ethereum Transactions

The Ethereum co-founder wants transactions split into actions and dependencies so checks can run in parallel, with EIP-8141 as a first draft.

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has proposed splitting transactions into two parts, actions and dependencies, a change he argues would let the network verify more transactions in parallel and cut costs.

In a detailed post, Buterin described the two components that make up any transaction. Actions are the parts that change Ethereum’s state, such as transferring ETH or calling a contract. Dependencies are the information required to establish that a transaction is valid in the first place, like ownership proofs or access lists.

Today both parts are processed together in a single bundle. Buterin’s proposal separates them so that mempools, the queues where pending transactions wait, could check the dependency part once and in advance. The verified results could later be compressed into recursive STARK proofs, meaning nodes would not have to repeat the same validity checks over and over as a transaction moves through the pipeline.

EIP-8141 provides a general framework

The idea arrives as a draft Ethereum Improvement Proposal, EIP-8141, which defines a new transaction type called a Frame Transaction. It divides a transaction into contract-call frames that can each validate authority, approve gas payment and perform user operations within one format.

According to the proposal, transaction validity and fee payment would no longer depend solely on a standard signature attached to the outer transaction. Buterin described the potential format as a basic list of calls with flags identifying their function: a call could be marked as a pure dependency, a state-dependent verification or an action. The transaction would also carry standard information such as its origin and nonce.

EIP-8141 remains a draft Core proposal. Its current specification covers mempool admission, frame execution, receipts, signatures, gas accounting and transaction propagation, all of which can change during review. There is no timeline for inclusion in a network upgrade.

Why it matters for fees

The practical appeal is parallelism. A large share of node work is spent re-verifying facts that do not change between when a transaction enters the mempool and when it lands in a block. If dependencies can be proven once and carried forward as a compact proof, execution capacity shifts toward the state-changing work that actually needs sequential processing.

For users, the route to lower costs runs through that shift. The proposal also fits Ethereum’s longer arc of account abstraction work, where signature schemes, gas payers and session keys have been moving from fixed protocol rules into flexible per-frame logic. A generalized frame format could absorb several existing proposals rather than requiring separate transaction types for each.

The post lands during a busy stretch for Ethereum’s roadmap. Buterin has separately outlined what he calls a Lean Ethereum plan, a multi-year overhaul he has compared in scale to the 2022 Merge, covering storage reorganization that could cut fees for some tokens by more than 10x and a move toward quantum-resistant cryptography. The transaction redesign would slot into that broader sequence.

Long road from draft to mainnet

Draft EIPs routinely stall or change beyond recognition. The proposal will need review from client teams, security analysis of the proof-compression design, and eventually a slot in a hard fork, where competing protocol changes compete for limited slots. Similar earlier efforts, such as the account abstraction roadmap that eventually produced ERC-4337, took years from concept to production use.

Still, the direction drew little pushback in early responses, with several researchers noting that separating validity from execution mirrors how other distributed systems stage expensive verification work. Whether it ships as EIP-8141 or folds into a later proposal, the underlying idea of proving dependencies once and executing actions in parallel is likely to stay on the table.

Traders mostly shrugged. Ether changed hands near $2,450 after the post, up modestly on the day, with no sign the proposal moved the market in either direction. Protocol research announcements rarely do. The impact, if any, arrives with adoption, not authorship.
