Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Wednesday that Ukraine managed to thwart a planned Russian offensive last month, declaring that the frontline situation is the best it has been for months in a significant update on the battlefield.
Zelenskyy’s statement came as Ukrainian forces reported 259 combat engagements across the front over the past 24 hours, with the heaviest fighting concentrated in the Pokrovsk direction where defenders repelled 27 attacks. The South Slobozhanske direction saw a dramatic spike, with 23 Russian attacks repelled compared to just two the previous day.
The president’s assessment aligns with analysis from the Institute for the Study of War, which recently found that Russian forces gained just 38 square kilometers in July, smaller than the area of Manhattan, with no operationally significant advances. Ukrainian forces actually liberated more territory than Russia seized in both April and May.
In the Sloviansk direction, where Russia has been trying to push toward the last major Ukrainian-held cities in Donetsk province, ISW analysts noted that Russian offensive operations continued in early August but made no confirmed progress as Ukrainian forces launched counterattacks in the area.
The frontline update comes amid intense pressure on several sectors. In the Kostiantynivka direction, 22 enemy attacks were recorded in a single day, while the Lyman direction saw 14 Russian assaults near multiple settlements. Ukrainian forces also continued their drone strike campaign against Russian command posts in rear areas south of Kostiantynivka.
Despite the positive assessment, challenges remain significant. Russia continues to escalate its use of ballistic missiles, and Ukrainian officials have warned that interceptor missile stocks for Patriot batteries are running critically low. The recent massive barrage on Kyiv that killed 17 people underscored the continuing threat to major cities.
Zelenskyy has been pressing Western allies for additional air defense systems, particularly ahead of winter when Russia historically intensifies strikes on energy infrastructure. The deployment of a North Korean missile unit to western Russia, reported by Ukrainian intelligence on the same day, adds further urgency to these requests.
