A Russian drone carrying an onboard AI targeting system killed three Ukrainian civilians last month in what experts say is the first confirmed autonomous lethal strike in the war, with no human operator making the final kill decision.
The attack struck a gas station in Zaporizhzhia on July 26, killing university student Tetiana Bubynets, 19, and two others. Analysis of the wreckage revealed an Nvidia chip, believed to be a Jetson Orin module, embedded in an autonomous targeting system that used visual recognition to select the point of impact.
According to the New York Times, human operators programmed the drone to fly toward the general area of propane tanks at the gas station. From there, the AI took over, using computer vision to identify and lock onto the precise target without any data link to a human controller.
A Grim Milestone in Machine-Driven Warfare
The Nvidia Jetson Orin is commercially available edge AI hardware capable of running complex computer vision models in real time. It is exactly the type of chip a drone would need to autonomously identify and engage targets without operator input.
