Kyiv declared a Day of Mourning for August 21 after a massive Russian missile and drone attack killed at least 15 people and injured more than 46, including five children, overnight on August 19-20.

The assault was one of the largest strikes on the Ukrainian capital in months. Russia launched ballistic missiles, 46 cruise or air-to-ground missiles, and 168 drones in a combined barrage aimed primarily at the Kyiv region, according to Ukraine’s Air Force. Air defense forces intercepted 41 cruise missiles and 145 drones, but a significant number of munitions struck their targets across 28 locations.

Children’s Hospital Hit as Death Toll Rises

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed that 15 people were killed and at least 46 injured, with the heaviest losses in the Solomyanskyi district where 10 residents died. Among the damaged sites were residential buildings, a children’s hospital, a school, and energy infrastructure facilities. Fires broke out across warehouse complexes and apartment buildings in the Sviatoshynskyi, Solomianskyi, and Darnytskyi districts.

The children’s hospital in Solomyanskyi district sustained damage when ballistic missiles struck the area, breaking windows and igniting vehicles parked nearby. Parts of the Brovary district in Kyiv Oblast were left without electricity following damage to the energy grid.

Zelenskyy Demands More Air Defenses

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in a social media post that Russia had prepared the attack for a long time, combining ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and drones to maximize damage to civilian infrastructure. He noted that while roughly 90% of cruise missiles were intercepted, ballistic missiles remain the most challenging threat to Ukraine’s overstretched air defenses.

As long as Ukraine lacks sufficient anti-ballistic defenses, Russia will not seriously consider peace. We are doing everything we can to ensure protection, and work on the FREYJA program continues every day.

Zelenskyy renewed his appeal to foreign partners for Patriot interceptor missiles, warning that Russia continues investing in ballistics while the world fails to respond with matching urgency. Ukraine is developing its own FREYJA anti-ballistic interceptor, but officials say it will not be operational until 2027.

City Braces for Mourning

Klitschko ordered all municipal buildings to fly flags at half-mast and banned entertainment events across the capital for the duration of the mourning day. State institutions, private businesses, and organizations were asked to lower national flags in tribute to the victims.

Russia’s Defense Ministry described the overnight strikes as targeting military-industrial enterprises, a transport and logistics hub, and warehouses in Kyiv and the surrounding region. Moscow also claimed to have shot down at least 726 Ukrainian drones across 18 Russian regions overnight, including 28 over the Moscow region.
