Ukraine Launches Record 822-Drone Attack on Moscow Oblast

Ukraine unleashed one of its largest aerial attacks of the war, striking Moscow Oblast with hundreds of drones, hitting a Wildberries warehouse and killing at least 6 across Russia.

Ukraine launched a massive overnight drone attack on Moscow Oblast early on August 16, described by regional Governor Andrey Vorobyov as one of the most massive attacks in recent memory. Russia’s Defense Ministry reported intercepting 822 Ukrainian drones across several regions overnight, a figure that would rank among the largest Ukrainian aerial assaults of the entire war.

Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin claimed that as many as 600 drones were headed toward Moscow Oblast in total, with Russian air defenses intercepting 201 over the region. Vorobyov confirmed 187 drones were downed across the oblast, including over Domodedovo, Podolsk, Stupino, Odintsovo, Naro-Fominsk, and at least four other cities and towns.

Wildberries Warehouse and Logistics Complex Hit

A fire broke out at a warehouse belonging to major Russian online retailer Wildberries in the village of Koledino near Moscow after it was struck during the attack, Vorobyov said. Monitoring channels posted footage purportedly showing the aftermath of the strike on the facility. In the city of Domodedovo, the Severnoye production and logistics complex was also set ablaze during the assault.

Wildberries lists a range of military equipment on its website, including drone components and body armor. The company’s banking arm was sanctioned by the European Union in July over its financial contribution to Russia’s state budget. Wildberries also plays a significant role in the Russian consumer economy, making it a strategic target beyond its military ties.

Multiple Regions Hit, Casualties Reported

Attacks extended beyond Moscow Oblast into southwestern Rostov Oblast, where Governor Yuri Slyusar reported 150 drones and missiles downed over three cities and nine districts. Five people were killed and one injured in those strikes, the governor alleged. One person was also killed in Moscow Oblast, according to Vorobyov’s initial reporting.

The sheer scale of the attack suggests a significant expansion in Ukraine’s deep-strike capabilities. Ukrainian forces have been intensifying attacks on Russian territory throughout the summer of 2026, with recent strikes hitting oil refineries, military airbases, and key logistics infrastructure across multiple Russian regions.

Escalating Cycle of Retaliation

The massive aerial assault came just one day after Russia launched 152 Shahed-type drones across Ukraine overnight on August 15, killing a three-month-old boy in Marhanets and striking targets in Zaporizhzhia and Odesa. That attack was part of an ongoing Russian campaign targeting Ukrainian civilian and energy infrastructure ahead of the expected winter strike season.

Russia’s Defense Ministry did not provide an immediate comment on the overnight attacks beyond the intercept figure. Ukraine has not officially commented on the strikes. Independent verification of casualty and damage figures from both sides remains difficult as the conflict enters its third full year.

The escalating exchange of drone attacks underscores the widening scope of the conflict, with both sides now capable of striking deep behind front lines. Analysts have noted that Ukraine’s long-range drone arsenal has grown substantially, with French analyst Clément Molin reporting that Ukraine launched over 7,000 deep-strike drones in March 2026 alone, surpassing Russia’s output for the first time.
