Apple Debuts M6 Chip, First 2nm Processor in New Mac Mini

Apple launches M6 and M5 Ultra chips, marking its first 2-nanometer Mac processors with up to 40% faster multithreaded performance and 4x AI speed gains.

Apple on Tuesday unveiled the M6 chip in a new Mac mini and the M5 Ultra in an updated Mac Studio, marking the first time the company has shipped a 2-nanometer processor for its desktop lineup. The M6 debuts at $899, a 12.5% increase over the previous M4 Mac mini, while the M5 Ultra-powered Mac Studio targets pro users demanding maximum compute density. Both machines are available for pre-order with shipping set for September 22.

What the M6 Delivers

Apple says the M6 features a 12-core CPU and 12-core GPU with 170 GB/s memory bandwidth. Multithreaded performance jumps up to 40% compared to the M4, while AI inference tasks run four times faster. Storage speeds have doubled, and 2.5-gigabit Ethernet is now standard across the lineup. The chip is Apple’s first to use TSMC’s N2 process node, which packs more transistors into a smaller die while reducing power consumption.

“These are amazing platforms for AI and agentic tools,” Apple CEO Tim Cook said during the announcement. The company is positioning both machines as local AI development workstations, targeting developers who want to run large language models on-device without cloud dependencies.

Mac Revenue Surges 29%

The launch comes as Apple’s Mac division posts its strongest growth in years. Mac revenue hit $10.35 billion in the June quarter, up 29% from $8.05 billion a year earlier. Macs now account for 9.5% of Apple’s total $109.42 billion in quarterly sales, up from 8.6% a year ago. The growth has been driven by demand for Apple Silicon machines among AI developers and creative professionals.

The M5 Pro model begins at $1,699, a 6.3% increase over the previous generation. That model adds Thunderbolt 5 connectivity and a maximum of 20 GPU cores for workstation-class rendering and machine learning workloads.

2nm Manufacturing and Supply Constraints

The shift to 2nm represents a significant manufacturing milestone. TSMC’s N2 process uses gate-all-around transistor architecture, which offers better power efficiency than the 3nm chips Apple has used since 2023. Apple is the first major customer to deploy N2 silicon in consumer products, giving it a temporary lead over competitors still relying on older nodes.

Supply constraints remain a concern. Apple has faced roughly one-month delays on some MacBook Air configurations due to component shortages driven by AI infrastructure demand. The Mac mini launch will test whether the company can maintain volume while transitioning to a more advanced manufacturing process.

At current Mac revenue levels, even one million base Mac mini units at the higher $899 price would add roughly $100 million in revenue, or about 0.09% of Apple’s quarterly sales. The pricing increase is more about defending hardware margins than moving the needle on total revenue.
