Grayscale Launches World First Zcash Spot ETF on NYSE Arca

Grayscale converts its 2017 Zcash Trust into a spot ETF trading as ZCSH, giving investors regulated access to the privacy coin after a critical security flaw was patched.

Grayscale Investments launched the world first spot Zcash exchange-traded fund on Tuesday, converting its longstanding Grayscale Zcash Trust into a regulated product trading under ticker ZCSH on NYSE Arca.

The launch marks a milestone for privacy-focused cryptocurrencies, giving retail and institutional investors direct exposure to Zcash (ZEC) through standard brokerage accounts without needing to manage wallets or private keys. ZEC was trading around $833 at the time of launch.

From Trust to ETF

The Grayscale Zcash Trust was established in October 2017 and traded over-the-counter under the same ZCSH ticker. Assets under management exceeded $260 million in recent reports. Grayscale filed its initial Form S-3 registration with the SEC in November 2025 and submitted its fifth amendment on August 21, 2026, clearing the path for Tuesday debut.

BNY Mellon serves as transfer agent and administrator, while Coinbase Custody Trust Company holds the underlying ZEC. Jane Street Capital and Virtu Americas are expected to act as authorized participants for share creation and redemption.

“We believe Zcash has a compelling long-term role to play, and are proud to make its token accessible through an exchange-traded product structure investors already know,” said Steve Vanourny, Head of Index at Grayscale.

Privacy Flaw Fix Paved the Way

The launch comes after a turbulent period for Zcash technical foundation. In May 2026, researchers disclosed a four-year-old vulnerability in Zcash Orchard shielded pool that could have enabled counterfeit ZEC creation. A patch was deployed in June, and the Ironwood upgrade in July replaced the compromised Orchard pool with a new architecture.

The resolution appears to have been a precondition for regulatory comfort. Grayscale has said it will continue monitoring the network adoption, utility, and security, including the Ironwood upgrade and broader regulatory changes around privacy coins.

Expanding the ETF Landscape

If successful, ZCSH could open the door for additional privacy-focused crypto ETFs. Zcash remains the largest privacy coin by market capitalization and uses zero-knowledge proofs to enable shielded transactions. The product carries a 2.5% annual management fee in its first year, which Grayscale said it would allocate toward supporting the Zcash network.

The launch broadens the crypto ETF market beyond Bitcoin and Ethereum products, which have dominated institutional flows throughout 2026. Grayscale now operates ETFs for multiple digital assets including Solana and XRP.
