AMD Acquires AI Chip Startup Taalas to Challenge Nvidia

AMD is buying Taalas, a Toronto startup that hardwires AI models directly into silicon, promising 10x faster inference at a fraction of the cost of general-purpose GPUs.

AMD announced a definitive agreement to acquire Taalas, a Canadian AI inference chip startup that embeds neural network models directly into custom silicon, in a move aimed at narrowing the gap with Nvidia in the rapidly growing AI accelerator market.

Founded in 2023 and headquartered in Toronto, Taalas has developed a process that transforms AI models into dedicated application-specific integrated circuits. Unlike general-purpose GPUs that can run many models reasonably well, Taalas chips are purpose-built to run one model exceptionally well. Early demos showed the technology achieving up to 17,000 tokens per second on Meta’s Llama 3.1 8B model, using a TSMC 6-nanometer process.

“We founded Taalas to rethink AI inference from the ground up by building the hardware around the model,” said Ljubisa Bajic, co-founder and CEO of Taalas. The company claims its approach delivers roughly 10x performance improvements at 20x lower cost compared to general-purpose architectures for specific large language models.

AMD plans to integrate Taalas’ technology into its accelerator roadmap and develop system-level solutions pairing the specialized chips with AMD Instinct GPUs. The vision involves a disaggregated architecture where compute-heavy prompt processing runs on GPUs while token generation is offloaded to Taalas-based accelerators.

“AMD is building a full-stack AI platform that gives customers the flexibility to deploy the right compute solutions for every AI workload,” said Vamsi Boppana, senior vice president of AMD’s Artificial Intelligence Group. The acquisition complements AMD’s existing portfolio including Helios rackscale solutions, Instinct GPUs, EPYC CPUs, and ROCm software.

The deal comes as AI inference becomes one of the fastest-growing segments of the AI market. While training models requires massive GPU clusters, serving those models to millions of users demands a different kind of efficiency. Companies are increasingly seeking specialized hardware optimized for specific inference workloads rather than relying solely on expensive general-purpose processors.

AMD did not disclose financial terms, but described it as a full acquisition rather than an acqui-hire. The deal is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2026, subject to regulatory approvals. If Taalas’ technology delivers on its promises, it could give AMD a differentiated offering that Nvidia lacks, potentially reshaping competitive dynamics in the AI chip market.
