Brazilian police have recovered eight works by French artist Henri Matisse that were stolen from Sao Paulo’s largest public library, ending months of uncertainty over the fate of the culturally irreplaceable artworks.
The pieces, part of Matisse’s iconic 1947 “Jazz” portfolio of paper-cut compositions, were found on Thursday at an apartment in Sao Bernardo do Campo, a suburb about 12 miles southeast of Sao Paulo. A 44-year-old man, Joao Paulo Linhares de Araujo, was arrested at the scene and is suspected of having stored the artworks on behalf of those involved in the theft, as well as illegal possession of a firearm.
The Heist That Shocked Brazil’s Cultural Sector
The robbery took place on December 7, 2025, at the Biblioteca Mario de Andrade during the final hours of an exhibition titled “From Book to Museum,” a joint display with the Sao Paulo Museum of Modern Art. Two armed men entered through the library’s main entrance, threatened a security guard and an elderly couple, and fled with the artworks in what appeared to be a sack.
In addition to the eight Matisse prints, the thieves also took five illustrations by Brazilian modernist master Candido Portinari made for a special edition of Jose Lins do Rego’s novel “Menino de Engenho.” The Portinari works have not been recovered. The combined value of the stolen pieces was estimated at approximately $200,000, though art experts described the cultural significance as “beyond measure.”
Long Investigation Leads to Recovery
The investigation expanded rapidly after the robbery. Brazilian police identified the suspected organizer of the theft as Laessio Rodrigues de Oliveira Silva, who had a prior conviction from 1998 for stealing rare magazines from Brazil’s National Library Foundation. Several other suspects were arrested in the months following the heist, including Carlos Leandro Ferreira da Silva and Regiane Rodrigues da Silva.
Sao Paulo’s mayor Ricardo Nunes had previously stated that Interpol was notified to prevent the works from leaving the country. The recovery of the Matisse prints marks a significant success for Brazilian law enforcement in protecting cultural heritage, coming just days after Italian Carabinieri recovered three priceless artworks stolen from a museum near Parma in a separate case.
The arrest of Araujo and the recovery of the prints represent a breakthrough in a case that had drawn international attention and raised serious concerns about the security of Brazil’s cultural institutions. Authorities continue to investigate whether additional suspects remain at large and whether the Portinari illustrations can also be recovered.
