Russian forces launched a massive overnight barrage across Ukraine on August 16, killing seven people and injuring 51, with a major steel plant among the targets struck in one of the most geographically widespread attacks in recent weeks.
The barrage targeted multiple Ukrainian cities simultaneously. In Kryvyi Rih, President Zelenskyy’s hometown, a Russian missile killed two people and wounded 14 others. ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih, Ukraine’s largest steel producer, confirmed that one of its sites had been hit in the attack and that operations had been partially suspended.
Kyiv Book Market Burns as Fires Spread Across Capital
In the capital, Russian strikes sparked fires across several Kyiv districts, wounding six people. A blaze tore through one of the city’s largest book markets near the Pochaina metro station, destroying crowded kiosks and sending plumes of black smoke across the capital. Russia’s Ministry of Defense said it had targeted military-industrial sites in Kyiv, including a manufacturing facility for Ukraine’s Flamingo missiles.

Southern Ukraine and Sumy Hit
In the Zaporizhzhia region, a man and a woman died when their home was hit by a Russian strike, said Ivan Fedorov, head of the local military administration. Russian forces also struck the Zaporizhzhia district with guided aerial bombs, killing two people and injuring another. In Sumy, one person was killed in a separate drone attack on a civilian vehicle.
The overnight barrage coincided with Ukraine’s own massive drone attack on the Moscow region, which killed at least six people in Russia and set a Wildberries warehouse ablaze near Moscow. The simultaneous escalation highlights the intensifying aerial dimension of the conflict as both militaries push deeper into each other’s territory.
Ukraine’s air defense forces neutralized 85 drones and three Kh-59/69 guided air-launched missiles used by Russian forces during the overnight attack, according to the Ukrainian Air Force. Despite these interceptions, the sheer volume of incoming projectiles overwhelmed defenses in several locations.
