Ukrainian forces struck a key railway bridge, logistics depots, and coastal missile positions across temporarily occupied territories overnight on August 16, the General Staff reported, continuing a systematic campaign to disrupt Russian military logistics in the south.
The main target was a railway bridge near Svitlodolynske in the temporarily occupied Zaporizhzhia region, which Russian forces used to transport personnel and supplies to frontline positions. The General Staff confirmed the strike but did not specify which weapons were used or provide a detailed damage assessment.
Multi-Target Overnight Operation
In addition to the railway bridge, Ukrainian forces targeted Russian logistics and ammunition depots near Karlivka in the temporarily occupied Donetsk region. The strikes aimed to degrade Moscow’s ability to sustain offensive operations along the eastern front, where Russian forces have been pressing forward at significant cost.
In occupied Crimea, the operation hit positions near Rezervne where a Russian missile unit was concentrated. Ukraine’s Navy later identified the target as deployment sites of Russia’s Bastion coastal missile system, which is used to launch Oniks anti-ship missiles and Zircon hypersonic cruise missiles against Ukrainian territory.
The August 16 strikes came alongside separate Ukrainian Navy operations against Bastion launch sites elsewhere in occupied Crimea, as Kyiv continues to prioritize degrading Russia’s long-range strike capabilities across multiple fronts.
Pattern of Infrastructure Strikes
The overnight operation is part of a broader Ukrainian strategy of targeting rail infrastructure connecting occupied territories to Russia’s logistics network. Ukraine has struck multiple bridges in occupied Zaporizhzhia and Crimea since June, including the destruction of the Chonhar railway bridge that linked occupied Kherson region to the Crimean peninsula.
Russian forces depend on a limited number of rail corridors to supply troops in the southern sector. Each successful strike forces Moscow to reroute supplies through longer and more vulnerable pathways, increasing fuel costs and transit times for ammunition, equipment, and reinforcements heading to the front.
The Bastion system strikes carry additional significance because Russia has been escalating its use of long-range missiles against Ukrainian cities. Zelenskyy recently warned that Russia plans to nearly triple its missile firepower by firing up to 200 ballistic missiles simultaneously, making the elimination of launch platforms a top priority for Ukrainian planners.
