The European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS) reports that the area burned by wildfires in Europe this year is already well above the 20-year average, with the peak summer season still ongoing.
The European Union has activated its emergency response protocols, including the Copernicus satellite system for real-time fire mapping and the rescEU reserve of firefighting assets. ‘We stand in full solidarity with Greece, France, Spain, and all member states affected by these devastating fires,’ a European Commission spokesperson said.
