Iran announced on Sunday the discovery of more than 200 billion cubic metres of natural gas in the southern Fars province, a significant find that comes as the country’s energy infrastructure continues to suffer damage from months of US-Israeli military strikes.
Petroleum Minister Mohsen Paknejad told Iranian state television that exploration teams had located the reserves in southern Fars, with over 160 billion cubic metres of the find deemed potentially recoverable. He described the deposit as sweet natural gas, meaning it contains very low levels of the toxic compound hydrogen sulphide, which significantly reduces operating and development costs.
Wartime Discovery Amid Infrastructure Losses
The announcement carries strategic weight given the timing. Iran’s energy sector has faced sustained disruption since late February, when joint US-Israeli strikes targeting the Islamic Republic’s war infrastructure began hitting gas production facilities, oil depots and transport routes across the country.
Western analysts have noted that any new production from the Fars discovery would likely be years away, according to Bloomberg. Developing the field will require substantial investment and construction at a time when Iran’s economy is under tightening financial pressure from Washington.
The discovery echoes a similar announcement from October 2025, when Paknejad revealed major gas and oil reserves at the Pazan field in southern Fars Province, estimated at 10 trillion cubic feet. That field was expected to begin production within 40 months. It remains unclear how the new find relates geographically or geologically to the earlier Pazan discovery.
Sanctions Squeeze Deepens
The gas find arrives as the United States prepares a new round of sweeping sanctions against Iran. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is expected to announce the measures imminently, targeting what Washington describes as Iran’s financial and energy networks in an effort to force Tehran back to the negotiating table over the ongoing conflict.
Iran has responded defiantly, with officials dismissing the planned sanctions as a desperate measure by a US administration that has failed to achieve its objectives through military means. China, Iran’s largest trading partner, has also pushed back against the sanctions push, rejecting what it characterized as economic warfare.
Iran’s energy sector has taken a hit since joint US-Israeli strikes on the Islamic republic launched the Middle East war in late February.
The 14-point Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, signed between Washington and Tehran in June, remains the primary diplomatic framework for ending the conflict. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has publicly backed the memorandum as the best path forward, though negotiations have stalled in recent weeks.
