Two Polish F-16 fighter jets intercepted a Russian Il-20 reconnaissance aircraft over the Baltic Sea on July 31, about 40 kilometers north of the coastal city of Kolobrzeg, Polish Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz said. The Russian plane remained in international airspace and never entered Polish territory, but it was flying without a filed flight plan and with its transponder switched off.
“Another successful interception of a Russian aircraft over the Baltic Sea,” Kosiniak-Kamysz wrote on X. “The Polish Armed Forces continuously monitor the situation and respond decisively to the actions of the Russian Federation while remaining in close cooperation with our NATO allies,” he added. The Il-20 is a military reconnaissance aircraft used to gather intelligence on radar, communications and air defense systems.
The interception came a day after a Russian Kh-101 cruise missile entered Polish airspace during a large-scale Russian attack on western Ukraine and crashed near Tarnawa-Kolonia in eastern Poland, roughly 80 kilometers from the Ukrainian border. The missile left a crater several meters wide but caused no casualties, and Polish authorities said the weapon carried a significant amount of explosive material.
Prime Minister Donald Tusk said there was no indication Poland had been deliberately targeted, although an investigation remains ongoing. Tusk added that Polish forces had been prepared to shoot the missile down had it continued deeper into the country’s airspace. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte described the incursion as “yet another reckless act by Russia.” The incident drew condemnation across Europe and renewed concern that Moscow’s war against Ukraine could spill over into neighboring NATO members.
Friday’s interception was the latest in a series of encounters involving Russian military aircraft over the Baltic Sea. Polish fighter jets intercepted Russian aircraft on three consecutive days earlier this month, including Il-20 reconnaissance planes and Su-30 fighters operating from Russia’s Kaliningrad exclave, which borders Poland and Lithuania.
Russian military aviation activity in the region is monitored through NATO’s Baltic Air Policing mission, under which Polish and allied aircraft patrol the airspace over the Baltic states and the Baltic Sea. Warsaw has repeatedly called for a stronger allied air presence as Russian sorties near NATO territory have increased since Moscow launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. NATO has also stepped up rotations of allied fighters under the Baltic Air Policing mission in response to the heightened Russian activity.
The back-to-back incidents over the Baltic and along Poland’s eastern border have sharpened debate in Warsaw about air defense spending and the risks of escalation. Poland, which hosts NATO forces and serves as a key transit hub for Western military aid to Ukraine, has scrambled jets repeatedly during Russian missile barrages against western Ukraine.
