Russian warplanes dropped eight powerful glide bombs on residential neighborhoods in the southern Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia on Sunday evening, killing at least one person and wounding 31 others including a 16-year-old girl, regional governor Ivan Fedorov said.
The sustained 90-minute barrage damaged 22 apartment buildings across four districts of the city, marking one of the heaviest glide bomb attacks on the city in recent weeks. A 71-year-old woman was killed in the strikes, which also left several residents buried under rubble as emergency crews worked through the night.
Glide bombs are unpowered munitions fitted with wing kits that allow them to travel dozens of kilometers from launch aircraft, giving Russian pilots the ability to strike deep behind Ukrainian lines while remaining outside the range of most air defense systems. Ukraine has repeatedly warned that the lack of interceptor missiles is making it impossible to stop the increasingly frequent glide bomb attacks on cities.
The Zaporizhzhia attack came hours after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy urged Western allies to urgently supply additional Patriot air defense interceptors. Zelenskyy has said that Ukraine is running critically short of the US-made interceptor missiles that form the backbone of its defense against ballistic and cruise missile attacks.
The Washington Post reported that Ukrainian drone strikes across Russia overnight killed at least nine people, as Kyiv continues its campaign of long-range attacks on military and logistics targets deep inside Russian territory. Moscow claimed to have intercepted 635 Ukrainian drones in the overnight wave.
Ukraine’s military intelligence confirmed the deployment of its new Magura naval drone platforms to strike two Russian radar systems in temporarily occupied Crimea, while other drone units hit a Wildberries logistics center in Vladimir region and a drone development facility in Belgorod.
The escalation on both sides underscores the widening reach of the war as Russia intensifies its air campaign against Ukrainian cities while Ukraine pushes deeper into Russian territory with increasingly sophisticated drone technology.
