Ukrainian forces launched one of their largest overnight drone assaults on Russian territory in months, striking the strategic Engels-2 air base and an oil refinery in the Saratov region in the early hours of August 2, according to monitoring channels and regional officials.
Russian Governor Roman Busargin confirmed that 54 drones were intercepted over the Saratov region alone, but acknowledged a fire had broken out at the Engels air base. Geolocated footage published by the independent Russian outlet ASTRA showed two columns of thick black smoke rising from the refinery complex. Local residents reported hearing multiple explosions and seeing drones over the city of Engels, which sits across the Volga River from Saratov.
The Engels-2 air base is one of Russia’s most important strategic military installations, housing the country’s fleet of Tu-160 and Tu-95MS strategic bombers capable of carrying nuclear weapons. Previous Ukrainian strikes on the base, most recently in mid-July, have damaged infrastructure and disrupted sortie operations. The airfield has been a recurring target precisely because of its role in launching long-range cruise missile attacks against Ukrainian cities.
Separately, Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed that its air defenses had destroyed a total of 635 Ukrainian drones during the overnight wave across multiple Russian regions. In the Samara region, around 800 kilometers from the nearest Ukrainian-held territory, a Wildberries e-commerce warehouse in Novosemeykino was struck and caught fire, according to regional Governor Vyacheslav Fedorishchev. Two people were killed in the Engels district when a drone damaged a residential apartment building, officials said.
The Saratov oil refinery fire was described by OSINT monitoring channels as significant, with footage showing flames visible from several kilometers away. The refinery supplies fuel to military and civilian facilities across the region, including the Engels-2 base itself. Ukrainian Telegram channels claimed additional strikes on oil refining infrastructure in Saratov, though this could not be independently confirmed.
The attack is part of a sustained Ukrainian campaign targeting Russian energy and military infrastructure deep behind front lines. Over the past month, Ukrainian drones have struck oil refineries in Bashkortostan, Ryazan, and now Saratov, systematically degrading Russia’s refining capacity. The overnight wave’s scale suggests continued growth in Ukraine’s domestic drone production capabilities, even as frontline conditions remain attritional.
Russia’s Defense Ministry provided no additional details about damage to military assets at Engels-2, a base from which Tu-160 bombers regularly launch Kh-101 cruise missiles at Ukrainian cities. Ukrainian military analysts have long argued that disabling or degrading the base could reduce the frequency and scale of Russian strategic bomber strikes on Ukrainian population centers.
